Today, April 2, 2021, marks the sixteenth anniversary of the death of Saint John Paul II. As today is also Good Friday, we remember him praying in his private chapel while participating spiritually in his last Way of the Cross. He was watching the live television broadcast of the celebration taking place at Rome's Colosseum on March 25, 2005.

Good Friday is a day of strict fasting and abstinence to mark our commemoration of the sufferings of Christ: the mockery, the crown of thorns, the scourging, the nails, the thirst, the vinegar and gall, the cry of desolation, and all the Savior endured on the Cross.

If you can’t get out of something . . . get more deeply into it. Christ illustrated what that means in his prayer in Gethsemane.First he prayed that he might ge...t out of it: Father, let this cup pass from me. Then, when he couldn’t get out of it, he got deeply into it. The result was the resurrection. All of us are unhappy in our own way, be it with our marriage, our family, our celibacy, our church, our career, our neighborhood, our temperament, or even our physical appearance. If we can’t get out of theseget more deeply into them!
