Dear valued patients, Today Athletic Therapists across Ontario got some unfortunate news. After multiple days of delay, the Ontario government has ruled that ATs in Ontario cannot be working for the duration of the lockdown (which as it stands, is until Feb 19th). Until today, interpretation of the rules allowed for ATs to keep working. However the Ontario Athletic Therapists Association petitioned the government for clarification and an official decision. The government dec...ided to shut us down. ATs with exceptions to this rule are only those with second designations in a regulated profession (eg. someone is an AT & RMT) or ATs who might work as assistants to other regulated professions such as a physiotherapy or chiropractic assistant. Regardless, no billing as an "Athletic Therapist" will be allowed and it would be likely that insurance companies will flag and not cover those claims. ATs who contravene this government ruling by could face significant fines. It's strange covid times we live in when other provinces have allowed unregulated/self-regulated healthcare professions to remain open for patients, but Ontario will not. Regulation of professions is managed provincially (fun fact: not all RMTs are regulated in every province). It's short-sighted on the part of the Ontario government to not recognize the advanced educational requirements, certifications, and high standards of care and ethics that ATs, osteopaths, and others adhere to. This seems to be a glaring flaw in the system. So I apologize that I'm unable to treat until the lockdown lifts. For anyone who needs immediate care, I have some wonderful RMT friends who can help you get through till we see each other again. Feel free to reach out to me. Hopefully this lockdown is not further extended and we can get back to our quality patient care and helping you live active, pain-free lives. #ATlife #ontarioathletictherapists #oata #cata #covid #frustrating #ontariolockdown #dougford #evernewrehab
