[UPDATE ON MAKWA] In August of 2020, with thanks to so many of you, we were able to bring a cargo van full of supplies, for pets and people, to a northern commu...nity in Manitoba, that could put the items to good use, in partership with PAWSitive Pack Rescue. We welcomed 9 dogs from the community that needed our help most, and brought them back to Toronto with us. One of the medical cases was Makwa. A gentle giant, that had his eye requiring removal, had bite wounds across his body, was missing part of his paw and was in overall declining health. We were able get him in for surgery the next day of our arrival back to Toronto, to have his eye removed, his neuter completed, his wounds tended too and found him the most amazing foster Dad, previous adopter Guy, who we knew would be a forever Dad, once Makwa's medical needs were met. You can learn more about his arrival HERE: www.facebook.com/MattiesPlaceToronto/posts/3442653615774529 In September, we began consultations for Makwa's paw, to get him fitted with a prosthetic. He's a big boy and walking on his stump was not going to be feasible long term. We decided to work with K-9 Orthotics & Prosthetics Inc through Toronto Orthopedic Services Ltd. to get Makwa his prosthetic. In November his custom prosthetic arrived and it was life changing for this boy, but it did require some adjustments over the past couple months to make it absolutely right. Yesterday, his fully completed prosthetic arrived, and this is the result .... a dog with a wagging tail ... a dog that runs .... a dog that is nose to the ground and full of life. This is truly a life changer for Makwa. He is a new dog and being back 100% on all 4's changed everything about this really sweet boy. It infused a new life energy in him, and the moment was uplifting to everyone. Happy life darling sweet boy. Run. Wag. Sniff. Be happy.

Here is a video from our partner Hodes, showing the difference between no brace, soft wrap and a custom made carpal orthosis for a collateral ligament tear. This is the orthosis design we both use for carpal ligament issues including hyperextension. Looking good Sjef!

Luna is a beautiful 9 month old Saint Bernard who had been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that in more severe cases can cause lameness and painful arthritis. Some signs of hip dysplasia can be decreased range of motion, narrowing stance with the paws crossing under the body during movement, lameness in the hind end and a swayed and bunny hopping gait.... In Luna’s case her owners consulted an orthopedic surgeon who recommended bracing rather than surgery and as you can see in these photos, beautiful Luna is doing fantastic!

Very interesting opinion article by Neil MacDonald of the #CBC. There is another option besides surgery or euthanasia! Orthopedic bracing for this condition can be very successful, keeping your dog healthy and active. The brace works by keeping the hips in proper configuration and not allowing them to dislocate. This in turn can minimize the swelling and pain associated with osteoarthritis. We use a free swinging mechanical joint, meaning that the muscles are not impeded. Ma...ny of our clients report significant muscle building in the hind end as the patient is able to exercise freely, as well as less reliance on pain medications. Downtime is very minimal as it usually takes the patient several days to a couple of weeks to become accustomed to the brace, as opposed to weeks of surgical recovery. As a bonus, we encourage patients, those who enjoy it, to swim while wearing the brace. The braces are also serviceable and should last several years. For younger dogs the brace may need replacing over time, but older dogs may only need the one brace over their lifetime. As with any therapy, whether it be surgical, pain medications, rehabilitation or orthopedics, what works for one may not be the best option for another. A combination of therapies may lead to the best outcome. We encourage you to ask questions and explore all the options. We work with your veterinarian or rehabilitation practitioner to ensure that this is the right option for your dog. CBC News
