WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: TOONOO SHARKY Toonoo Sharky, born 1970 in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), began his career as a sculptor at nine years old and exhibited for the first time at the age of 17. Toonoo Sharky is known for his sculptures of arctic animals with spiritual variations. These multidimensional creations represent combinations of animals. His themes include dramatic treatments of wildlife, especially birds with human faces, and transformative works that are both power...ful and humorous. What Toonoo Sharky carves comes from the spirit of the stone and from his imagination. He explains, When I start on a piece of stone, I like to slowly work on the piece until the shape starts to form into a shape that I can recognize". He was elected to the Royal Academy of Canada (2003) and his works are in collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Government of Canada, University of British Columbia, and Winnipeg Art Gallery. WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: MARYSE CHARTRAND Maryse Chartrand, a graduate from the Centre des métiers du verre du Québec, started her career as a glass artist in 2013 after working in communications for 25 years. She views each of her pieces as a canvas on which she paints with glass. Her colouration technique uses exclusively particles of transparent and coloured glass that she builds layer upon layer. This process produces rich and organic piecesa surprise of details, textures and nuances. Her works are held in public and private collections nationally and internationally, including those of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. COLLECTION & ARCHIVES Created by an artist from Irografts, an arts and crafts store located in Ohsweken, Ontario, this doll represents a member of the False Face Society in full ritual dance. How is it made? Dried corn leaves are moistened with water and folded to be knotted into shapes. Volume is created by wrapping strips of corn leaves around the shapes. The dolls are dressed according to the desired gender and role.... Work: "Figurine" (no. H603), 19.6 x 13,7 x 8,9 cm, 1975-1985, Northeast, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). Materials: Corn leaves (Zea mays), linden wood (Tilia americana), pigment, rabbit fur (Sylvilagus floridanus), metal, felt, leather, glass beads, wool, cotton rope, birch bark (Betula papyrifera), red osier (Cornus stolonifera).

La soirée a pris la forme d'une discussion sur le travail de Pudlo Pudlat sur la présentation de l’art Inuit dans les musées. ---- As part of the exhibition "Pudlo Pudlat: Above the Limits", Heather Igloliorte, Director of Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership, and Nak Alariaq, the guest consultant on the project, joined us for the opening ceremony. The event took the form of a curatorial talk around Pudlo Pudlat's work and the presentation of Inuit Art in museums.

WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: GLENNA MATOUSH Established Ojibway artist Glenna Matoush was born in 1946 in Rama, Ontario, where she grew up watching her aunt and grandmother weave. After studying at the Graphic Guild of Montreal in the 60s and at the School of Fine Arts in Elliot Lake (AB), she began her career as a printmaker but later turned to painting and collage. Influenced by traditional Native crafts, she uses texture, light, colour and movement in her work, which often addresses social and political issues related to the land and the people of Mistissini, the Cree village where she raised her children. She has participated in several group and individual exhibitions across Canada, the United States, Central America and Europe. Works: Glenna Matoush, "Untitled", 1993; "B. WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: SIMEONIE KILLIKTEE Born in 1973, Simeonie Killiktee is an established carver based in Kimmirut (Lake Harbour, NU). Often depicting northern wildlife, the artist skillfully exploits the grain of soapstone and serpentine to give an unique texture to each of his creation, often accentuating the details using hand tools. His favourite subject, the muskox, is reprensented with a compelling contrast of the smooth polished stone and the rough textured details. WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: LOUISE LEMIEUX BÉRUBÉ Born in Montreal, Louise Lemieux Bérubé holds a bachelor's degree in Art History from the Université du Québec à Montréal and studied jacquard weaving at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1989, she co-founded the Centre des textiles contemporains de Montréal, which she directed until September 2012 and where she taught computer-assisted textile design. Since the beginning of her research in textile, she has developed a particu...lar approach thatusing computer toolscombines her practical and technical knowledge of textiles with her interest in abstract plasticism as potential elements of creation. Her woven creations have received numerous awards, such as the Saidye-Bronfman prize in 2005, and are part of many private and public collections including those of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin. WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: VIRGINIE TURCOT-LAMARRE (LOUVE) Based in Montreal, Virginie Turcot-Lamarre is a designer, jeweler, and founder of Louve, an independent and handmade jewelry line. She completed a bachelor's in Art History at the Université de Montréal before dedicating herself to jewelry making. Inspired by the natural warmth of wood and leather, she uses and combines salvaged materials to produce hybridsjewels that stand out by their audacity and character. Taking s...hape from very eclectic inspirations, her jewelry is characterised by a singular and assertive minimalist aesthetic. Each piece is handcrafted, one by one, with meticulous attention to detail and respect for the raw material. All pieces of wood are exclusively made from tree species native to Quebec’s forest. An appearanceunrefined at timestends to be preserved in the finishing process to highlight the uniqueness of each jewel and the person who will eventually wear it around their neck. WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: PUDLO PUDLAT Born in the outpost camp Admadjuak (NU), Pudlo Pudlat (1916-1992) was a talented artist of the Kinngait Studios. Originally a sculptor, Pudlat later devoted himself to drawing, painting and printmaking, creating approximately 4,500 drawings and 190 prints. Pudlat was the first Inuk to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (ON) in 1990 and is one of Kinngait’s most celebrated graphic artists. He was eloquent and open in t...he way he spoke about his life, family, and career drawing, living in outpost camps and eventually settling in Kinngait, though still travelling the world to share his art and perspective. In addition to being exhibited across Canada, the United States and Europe, his artworks are held in major public collections, including those of the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, ON), the Vancouver Art Gallery (Vancouver, ON) and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth (TX, USA). WEEKLY FEATURED ARTIST: JULIE BÉNÉDICTE LAMBERT Julie Bénédicte Lambert graduated in Studio Arts from Concordia University in 2000 and developed a passion for textiles and paper. To deepen her knowledge of textile building techniques, she completed a DEC at the Centre des textiles contemporains de Montréal in 2013. In the course of her research in the field of weaving, the etymological link between the words (texte in French) and textile has led the artist to adopt paper as ...a material, which has a multitude of uses. The artist is inspired by symbols of transmission of ideas and knowledge, of nobility and intimacy, which she transforms and weaves to provoke an internal dialogue between substance and form. The artist has already won several prizes and grants, inclusing the Prix François-Houdé 2020 and exhibited her work in Quebec, France, the United States, Ukraine, and Austria.
