As the weather turns colder so does the water temperature, life jackets should always be worn and worn properly while in the boat and near the water. Facts: Roughly 20 percent of those who fall into cold water die in the first minute of immersion due to cold water shock.... Even strong swimmers will lose muscle control in about 10 minutes. Body heat can be lost 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air. Wearing a life jacket significantly increases chances of survival. Be like Moose Cree’s Project George Coordinator Charlie Cheechoo and Moose Factory’s Assistant Fire Chief Elliott Schimmens and wear your life jackets!

Amber’s Fire Safety Campaign encourages families to teach children how to escape on their own in case of a fire. Practice different ways out. If you must escape... through smoke, Get Low and Go under the smoke to your way out (your head should be at the height of electrical outlets). Close doors as you leave if not hot to touch (closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire). #AmbersFireSafety See more

Description of Current River Conditions MNRF conducted a river surveillance flight today locally at Moosonee and Moose Factory Island and further assessed other nearby major tributaries in the area. The following river conditions were observed;... Ice break up has progressed down river from Moosonee creating a large expanse of open water or channel out to near James Bay (see photo 1). The north channel of the Moose River is open and flowing, however there remains a large extent of ice cover fronting the town of Moosonee (see photo 2). Over in the south channel of the Moose River at Moose Factory Island, the ice cover adjacent to Moose Factory Island continues to gradually break in sections and progress down river (see photo 3). As ice break up continues to occur, the accumulation of ice continues to gradually disperse and further reducing the extent of the ice accumulation at this location. The Moose River remains ice covered from Moose Factory Island extending down river to James Bay. The ice jam within the south channel at Moose Factory may gradually disperse from the tail end or under the existing ice cover extending out to James Bay The North French River tributary is open and flowing and with only residual ice accumulated along the shorelines (see photo 4) The Kewatebohegan River is open for the most part however remains ice covered near the mouth (see photo 5) Ice break up continues to progress within the Cheepash River which remains ice covered at the mouth extending a few kilometers upriver (see photo 6) Based on the above observations we conclude that the current risk for ice jam related flooding to occur is low for Moosonee and Moose Factory Island. Thank to MNRF for the update today May 12, 2020

Moose Factory Island Fire & Rescue will be allowing BACKYARD and COOK TENT FIRES to enjoy responsibly for immediate members of your household ONLY. The Moose Factory Pandemic Emergency Operations Team continues to encourage all community members to follow the health guidelines of practicing physical distancing that are required to prevent the spread of COVID-19, so we are asking families to abide by the Social Distancing rules. This means not having gatherings in your home or... backyard with people who don’t live in your household. Guidelines are subject to change at any time. Please follow these fire safety parameters: Use extreme caution when having your backyard fire to make sure it does not get out of control. Build fires where they will not spread; well away from tents, dry grass, leaves, overhanging tree branches or any other combustible. Keep fires in fire pits that are more than 1 metre (3 feet) high by 1 metre (3 feet) in diameter. Use crumpled paper and/or kindling to start a fire rather than using flammable liquids. Never build a fire on a windy day. Sparks or embers from the fire could travel quite a distance setting an unintentional fire. Don’t burn garbage or any leaves in your fire. The smell is unpleasant for your neighbors. Never leave fires unattended. Ensure that a responsible adult is monitoring the fire at all times. Keep a garden hose ready and available, and also a shovel around to douse the fire when you’re done. Use caution when applying water to the fire. Once the water has been applied, stir the dampened coals and douse it again with water. As an added precaution, shovel sand or dirt to cover the dampened coals to smother any remaining embers. Fires for burning grass, leaves, brush and large pieces of wood such as pallets are NOT ALLOWED at this time.
