With a surge in gender-based violence around the world due to national lockdowns, our CEO, Bruce Cleaver, has pledged that De Beers Group will donate $200,000 t...o support efforts to tackle domestic violence. The approach has been developed with our long term partner UN Women and the funds will go to frontline organisations providing support to survivors in Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa. Anne Shongwe from UN Women, South Africa said: We have seen a significant and deeply concerning surge in domestic violence in southern Africa, with calls of distress from women more than doubling. Current restrictions on movement locking women in with violent partners is exacerbating the situation, so we must ensure women can continue to access essential support services safely, as we work to beat COVID-19. A UN Women HeforShe Thematic Champion, Bruce is extremely passionate about this issue. De Beers has a longstanding commitment to support women and girls, and right now many need this support more than ever. Our funding will assist women’s support organisations to deliver critical services to victims of gender-based violence now, and throughout this pandemic.
