Anyone heading to Calgary this weekend who could take a special delivery??
https://journeydogtraining.com/pandemic-puppy-00/
Congratulations to wonder puppy Sequel and his dedicated people, Joel & Ashley - for successfully participating in and finishing their Bright Puppy lessons! He is as smart as he is cute!
Does your dog seem nervous around face coverings? Here are our tips to help your dog become more comfortable with masks!
Friends!! I need a ride for a lovely sweet kitten from Grande Prairie to Calgary. Her adoption is pending so its not a panic (she doesnt have to go tomorrow) but before Christmas would be delightful! Is anyone going down?
Congratulations to Debbie and her Bright Puppy, Briar Rose for enthusiastically and joyfully completing their Bright Puppy lessons together!
I hummed and hawed about sharing this here. Its heavy content. Behavioral euthanasia is not talked about (not in shelters, not by dog pros, and not by heartbroken pet owners). The only way to end the shaming, is to let in the light...
THANK YOU!!! I feel so grateful every day for the wonderful people I get to know through dogs. Thank you for all of your patience and kindness through these testing times. Purple Dog students have readily gone with the flow and whatever we have to do to continue to do more with our dogs. You have waited while i was unwell, you have stayed home when you were - and all with kindness and words of support, for me and for each other. I sincerely appreciate what an amazing group of humans you are <3 (ps. im fostering a litter of kittens for Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue Association - this little one is Faith)
It's HERE!!! Oh and its beautiful! Well done Give a Dog a Bone Photography! There are a couple Purple Dogs strutting their stuff in these pages too! All proceeds go to rescuing and caring for lost souls in your community. Do you have yours yet? Available at Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue Association It's Christmas! Let's help sell out this year's calendar!
Congratulations to Nate & Nell Martell for completing their Bright Puppy lessons while successfully having fun, socializing and learning with their Bright Puppy Ella!

Following on yesterday’s puppy post... Many puppy people are caught off-guard when their very sweet puppy enters adolescence. Here are two resources to prepare... and guide you through this often challenging time. Juvenile Delinquent Dogs: The Complete Guide to Saving Your Sanity and Successfully Living with Your Adolescent Dog by Sue Brown, MNM, CDBC, CPDT-KA $33 Cdn This is a comprehensive and effective guide - 353 pages have you covered! https://mungosbooks.ca//juvenile-delinquent-dogs-the-comp/ Adolescent Dog Survival Guide by Sarah Whitehead $4 Cdn The basics of canine adolescence in booklet form. https://mungosbooks.ca/produ/adolescent-dog-survival-guide/ Order at [email protected]
Congratulations to Bright Puppy Cuda and her Momma Sandi, on completing their puppy lessons!
ok dog people! changing this story starts with you. your dog is not trying to dominate you (he/she is trying to communicate). <3 your dog and spread the word.
Sounds trivial, but the choice of food you will use can boost your effectiveness and clarity or completely destroy your training session. You decide to use stic...ky hot dogs when your delivery pattern includes tosses good luck with that! I have been there soooo many times. My worse nightmare is those sticky treats that get glued to your hands when you try to throw them. You click, make a move, your dog runs forward, and nothing happens because this treat is still in your hand. Another scenario you were supposed to pick one treat; instead, your hand got stuck with 20 pieces of greasy liver. You try to deliver just one, your dog is confused, try to grab more, you move your hand, he follows, altho you wanted him to stay in position, and things just go crazy. Yep, I’ve been there too! One more, you want to deliver one treat in heel position, you reach to your pocket, but the treats are just too slippery. It takes ages to pick only one. There is another angle of treat choice. Crunchy, gummy, small or big ones? Does it matter? Oh, god, yes! A LOT! Imagine doing a distance control sequence in an offered loop you usually deliver ten cookies in less than one minute. But today, you choose large, crunchy meat cubes. Ah =, not a very wise choice! Now, after each rep, your dog takes 30 seconds to chew them properly, then he needs to clean the ground who would leave that much cruel on the floor! Or maybe you were tossing treats, and after your dog circled a cone, he was supposed to eat, turn and offer that behavior one more time. But you train on grass, and those super tiny meatballs are just not visible. Your dog keeps looking and sniffing for over a minute. Now that doesn’t sound like a very clean loop. Be wise about the choice of food for training. Adjust it to the learner, location, behavior, delivery pattern.
A trainer colleague asked me for a great puppy book for a beginner. Sometimes, I have a single title that clearly fits the bill for what someone is looking for.... And sometimes, the answer is: It depends... These are five excellent puppy books! The right one depends on what, if any, experience you have, how much you are willing to read, how interested you are in understanding training, and what you want to do with your puppy. And if YOU don’t need a puppy book...you must know somebody who does. Please send them my way! The FOCUSed Puppy: A Training System for Raising a Great Companion & Performance Dog by Deborah Jones, Ph.D. & Judy Keller $33 Cdn I REALLY like this book! It covers everything you need very well and focuses on attention and self-control - ideal for a future sport dog and necessary to prevent problems from developing down the road. https://mungosbooks.ca//the-focused-puppy-a-training-syst/ Control Unleashed: The Puppy Program by Leslie McDevitt, MLA, CDBC, CPDT $33 Cdn This is another good one and meets the bar set by her first book, Control Unleashed: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog - great attention exercises to prevent future problems, like reactivity, and strong foundation for a sport dog. But this is probably too much information for a newbie who just wants simple puppy training tips and doesn’t want to do a lot of reading. https://mungosbooks.ca//control-unleashed-the-puppy-progr/ Puppy Start Right: Foundation Training for the Companion Dog by Kenneth M. Martin, DVM and Debbie Martin, RVT, VTS (Behavior), CPDT-KA, KPA CTP $33 Cdn This covers everything you need, is well laid out and has plenty of step-by-step photos (black & white). It hits a happy medium in puppy books. https://mungosbooks.ca//puppy-start-right-foundation-trai/ The Puppy Primer, Second Edition by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. and Brenda Scidmore $23 Cdn This is the most stream-lined beginner book of the five - simple sections, well explained - good if you want solid basics, without a lot of exercises. The downside is that there are no pictures. https://mungosbooks.ca/pro/the-puppy-primer-second-edition/ Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right Dr. Sophia Yin, DVM, MS $27 Cdn There are lots of colour photographs in this book, illustrating everything step-by-step. This is the most visual guide, which works better for some people. https://mungosbooks.ca//perfect-puppy-in-7-days-how-to-st/ Still not sure? Just ask me! Order at [email protected]
Over the last month I’ve been busting some common dog behavior and training myths over on Instagram. I teamed up with Luvabullz as part of the Pit Bull Awarene...ss Month to expand our focus beyond breed advocacy and provide more education on behavior and training, something that will ultimately lead to more success for dogs and their people. I wanted to share this here since the idea that dogs should walk in a heel is a *very* popular one. Some see it as an exemplification of a well-behaved dog, others see it as a solution for behavior problems, while some get an ego boost from a heeling dog (sorry not sorry). I’ve even heard people explain that dogs who aren’t sniffing are less stressed. The reality is sniffing is an essential behavior for every dog. Sniffing lowers dogs’ pulse and the more they sniff and the more space they have to sniff, the more their pulse lowers. So no, dogs who aren’t allowed to sniff aren’t less stressed, just the opposite. Preventing dogs from sniffing on walks doesn’t contribute to better behavior or better health. It’s deprivation, pure and simple. Let your dog sniff. Let them explore. Please remember that their time outside is limited and their walks should be for *them.* And before anyone asks, yes, teaching loose leash walking is important, but it comes after our dogs’ needs have been met, not before. If you’re on IG, feel free to visit Luvabullz (https://instagram.com/luvabullz?igshid=1yzec3i9jytr) and take part in the giveaway later this week!

Hey Purple Doggers! does anyone have the link to my housetraining note? sigh Facebook changes...
So here we are...be prepared (as in 'bring a mask'). In group classes for sure, we need masks on. For private lessons, we can decide together
Many of you may not be aware that one of my dogs has aggression issues. Gunia has displayed numerous aggressive behavior over the years we spent together. Fro...m growling to severe bites - I still have scars to prove it. I can not say why she is/ was/ became aggressive. Her early life (it was not paradise as she ended up on the street), genes, certain events in her life, early sterilization. I have no idea and never will. I have to focus on what is happening now. The only thing I am sure of is that she is the dog that taught me a great deal, and I’m forever grateful. Right now, our life is peaceful, safe, happy. The biggest game-changer was when I have unlabeled aggressiondefined it by behaviors. Because aggression is nothing else but the label. The label we give to numerous behavior. Learn how to work with these behaviors, learn the science behind it. Learn how to change it, how to do it ethically. If you search for the cause inside the dog, you may find yourself trapped in a vicious circle of explanatory fiction and the inability to help your dog and yourself. #dog #dogs #aggression #dogtraining #dogbehavior See more
