We had the pleasure of finishing a 3000 square foot, new pine install in a waterfront home. It was coated with Bona's Intenseal and Traffic water-based urathane. Now there are beautiful views on both sides of the windows!

Sun and Water Damage Prefinished Oak Hardwood Water damage to hardwood floors does not only occur as a result of flooding. In the case of a recent project we completed in Stittsville, Ontario water damage occurred in combination with sun exposure and condensation dripping from a sliding glass door and swimming pool traffic through the door. Over time the ultra violet rays from the sun deteriorated the factory finish on the floor. Water collected and seeped through the seams... between the boards. Eventually the water swelled the wood under the finish and began to fatigue the surface allowing moisture to penetrate. The above before and after photos show how this floor was rejuvenated. The original factory finish was sanded to the bare oak underneath and the bevels between the board were scraped clean. This allowed penetration of the Bona Special Walnut Dri-Fast Stain. The floor was then coated with 2 coats of the Bona Mega Water Based Topcoat. This will give this beautiful red oak floor a second life. See more

Cupped Wood Floors Cupping occurs when the surface of the floor board is concave (when the sides are higher than the centre). This phenomena can occur to both solid and engineered hardwood flooring. Cupping is caused by an increase in the moisture content of the wood. ... Sources of the moisture can be the subfloor, concrete or even spills which migrate down the sides of the board to the base. When the moisture comes into contact with the underside of the wood the cells expand at a different rate than the top of the wood which is sealed. If the moisture continues to be absorbed by the wood the floor may buckle. In some cases when the moisture is removed the wood may return to its original shape. In more extreme conditions the wood may take on a set and the wood will be permanently deformed. If the wood floor is to be refinished (by sanding) while cupped it is essential that the moisture is removed. If the floor is sanded when moist (and cupped), when the wood dries it will take on a crowned (convex) shape. This is due to the wood returning to its original state but with the protruding (now recessed) material having been removed from the sides. The photos show a prefinished hickory floor with cupping before and after.
