Fire fatalities across Ontario have increased by 71%. In 2019, there were 66 fire fatalities and in 2020 that number increased to 113 fire fatalities. Keep fire safety a top priority, we don’t want you or your family to be a number added to the list in 2021! Only working smoke alarms can give you the early warning you need to safely escape a fire in your home. In addition to having working smoke alarms, develop and practice a home escape plan. Your life may depend on it tomorrow!

If you are planning on cooking tonight for New Year's Eve remember to stay in the kitchen while you are cooking and drink responsibly. Attempting to cook while under the influence of alcohol is too often a contributing factor in fatal fires.
Don't be alarmed! A reminder of the test today at 12:55 pm of the Alert Ready system. Learn more: https://www.alertready.ca/ #AlertReady

40 years ago, you had approximately 17 minutes to escape a fire after the activation of a smoke alarm. Now that number is 3 minutes or less! A closed-door can slow the spread of fire, reduce toxic smoke levels, improve oxygen levels, and decrease temperatures dramatically. Closing your bedroom door and having working smoke alarms, could save your life! #closebeforeyoudoze #firesafety

Earlier today, St. Clair Fire responded to a structure fire on Fawn Island. Firefighters from Port Lambton, Wilkesport and Becher station arrived on scene and immediately commenced an offensive fire attack. The fire was extinguished without incident or injury. The cause of this fire has been deemed accidental. The occupants had self-evacuated and called 9-1-1. The home was equipped with working smoke alarms. St. Clair Fire would like to remind everyone that early detection a...nd warning by smoke alarms provide you with more time to escape a fire. In addition to smoke alarms, developing and practicing a home fire escape plan is your best chance of surviving a fire in your home. Thank you to the residents of Fawn Island for your support during this incident.
What do all of these smoke alarms have in common? They are all expired! Both hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms do expire. Generally, this "end of life" timeframe is 10 years but always refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

If a pot of oil catches fire, never throw water on it! Instead, slide a lid over the pot and turn of the stove. Do not move the pot and remember always call 9-1-1. Check out this video to see why you should never add water to a grease fire! #FirePreventionWeek2020 #StandByYourPan #FireSafety
If a fire starts in your oven, close the oven door (no peeking - keep the door closed), turn the source of heat off and call 9-1-1 from a safe location #FirePreventionWeek2020
