Today, we remember our friend Cpl. Michael Starker. Mike was a field medic with the 15th Field Ambulance Regiment. On a goodwill patrol in a district west of Kandahar, Mike’s Civil-Military Co-operation team (CIMIC) came under fire and he was fatally wounded. At that time, he became the 83rd soldier to die in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. We met Mike back in paramedic school. An incredible human with a terrific sense of humour, Mike was always intent ...on helping others. He brought peace and joy wherever he went. The very purpose of his patrol mission was to build trust and understanding between the local villages and the army he served. He attempted to alleviate tension and diffuse conflict. He was a keeper of peace and would render assistance in any situation if given the chance. We remember and honour our friend, and the sacrifice he made in helping people in a war torn country. He wasn’t just serving Canada, he was serving humanity. Thank you Mike for being an example of what it means to be a hero, and a servant to others. Rest In Peace Brother.
