Five Things to Know on Wednesday, November 25th, 2020 1. There will be a nation-wide test of Canada's emergency alert system today... which means you'll hear it on radio, television and your mobile device. In Ontario it will happen at 12:55pm. 2. The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported 18 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, after a one-day drop back into the single digits. This marks the 16th day of double-digit cases this month. November has now far exceeded all previous months ...for total cases based on when the cases occurred with 322 cases. 3. A 43-year-old woman has died of injuries she suffered in a weekend townhouse fire on Purser Street in London. The Office of the Chief Coroner is reportedly working on the cause and manner of her death. London police say two children, a seven-year-old girl and five-year-old boy, remain in critical condition in hospital. The Major Crimes Section and Fire Marshal continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. 4. Ontario's Progressive Conservative government is poised to unveil the rules around celebrating the upcoming winter holidays in the shadow of COVID-19. The province's top two hot spots, Toronto and Peel Region are in lockdown mode and will be until just before Christmas. Ontario's top doctor said earlier this week it seemed unlikely the situation would improve in those regions enough to warrant lifting the lockdown. Most recent modelling showed the province is on track to see up to 65-hundred new daily cases by mid-December. 5. Western University is giving students an extended holiday break. The University closes December 22nd...and classes won't resume until Jan. 11th. President Alan Shepard wrote in an email to students that he has heard from many of them that this has been a particularly trying year and he hopes this extra time off will allow them to rest and recover a little longer. Overdose from opioids can happen to anyone. It’s a message Canadian paralympian Paul Rosen wants heard loud and clear. That’s because Rosen became addicted to opioids after a bad hockey injury back in 1975. A Canadian sledge hockey goalie for the Paralympic team, he's now a motivational speaker. As part of National Addictions Awareness Week this week, Rosen will be joining #KenandLoreena to share his story at 7:20 this morning.

Five Things to Know on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 1. The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported just six new COVID-19 cases yesterday, bringing the region’s total to just over a thousand now. (1005) The single-digit daily case count marks a significant drop from the long weekend. 2. There are ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks at nine seniors’ facilities as well as at London’s Sir Arthur Currie Public School and at Western University’s London Hall residence. There have now been eig...ht confirmed cases in local elementary and high schools...the most recent being Northdale Central Public School in Dorchester. 3. The City of London is moving forward with a very different parking-enforcement path by bringing it all in house. In a vote of 10-5 Tuesday, city council decided not to award Impark a three-year $3-million parking contract and instead, have the city's bylaw enforcement officers do the job starting in January. 4. A second child has died following a collision between a vehicle and horse and buggy over the weekend in Bruce County. Both of the children had been in the buggy when it was struck. 5. The airline that flies out of Toronto's Island airport is keeping its planes grounded until at least mid-December due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Porter Airlines has pushed back its relaunch date several times since it first cancelled all its flights on March 21st. See more

Five Things to Know on Wednesday, November 18th, 2020 1. Both Middlesex-London and Elgin-Oxford dropped back into single-digit COVID-19 case counts yesterday. It is the second day of single-digit counts for Middlesex-London after a nearly week-long run of double-digit cases that included the area’s highest ever one-day total. Middlesex-London reported just three new cases. 2. Across the province, 1,249 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths were reported yesterday. 3. The Ontario g...overnment is considering an extended school closure as the winter break approaches. Education Minister Stephen Lecce commented on the matter yesterday, adding that a comprehensive announcement is coming sometime in the next two weeks. 4. The mayor and incoming deputy mayor will push for financial compensation after the Ontario government forced London to abandon the use of ranked ballots. It was back on Monday that the province revoked permission for municipalities to use ranked ballots. 5. It may not come as much of a surprise but the reality is still a bitter pill to swallow. There will be no Wine and Food Show or Home and Outdoor Show as they and many others part of the Winter/Spring show season at the Western Fair District have been cancelled due to COVID-19. See more

Five Things to Know on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020 1. An individual has tested positive at an elementary school in Dorchester, the latest case of COVID-19 in area schools. Parents, guardians and staff of Northdale Central Public School were notified by the Middlesex-London Health Unit Sunday night. 2. On Sunday the health unit declared an outbreak at Sir Arthur Currie Public School after a second case of COVID-19 was confirmed. Officials believe the two cases are associated w...ith each other, which led to the outbreak declaration. A case has also been confirmed at Mary Wright Public School in Strathroy, and four individuals from London Hall residence at Western have tested positive. 3. The Middlesex-London Health Unit is reporting a record-high number of coronavirus cases for the region. On Monday it reported 25 new cases of the virus, beating the mark of 24 set on April 15. There are currently eight active institutional outbreaks including long term care homes. ( Those are Extendicare, Earls Court Village, Mount Hope, Meadow Park Care Centre, Peoplecare Oak Crossing, McGarrell Place, Craigwiel Gardens and Country Terrace.) 4. The federal Conservatives do not appear ready to let the WE Charity controversy drop from the public's sight. M-P Michael Barrett -- the party's ethics critic -- is continuing to call for further investigative avenues -- including the creation of a new anti-corruption committee. 5. Defiant as ever about the coronavirus U-S President Donald Trump turned his first campaign rally since contracting COVID-19 into a full-throated defence of his handling of the pandemic. Trump joked Monday that he was healthy enough to plunge into the Florida crowd and give voters ``a big fat kiss.'' See more

Five Things to Know on Friday, October 9th, 2020 1. The MLHU along with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) confirmed this morning that a person tested positive for COVID-19 at Sir Arthur Currie Public School in London. 2. London’s two COVID-19 assessment centres will be open on Thanksgiving Monday. The Carling Heights Assessment Centre will be open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on holiday Monday, while the Assessment Centre at Oakridge Arena will be open on from 9:00 ...am to 5:00 pm. Carling Heights will also be open Saturday and Sunday as usual, while Oakridge will be closed as normal. 3. The unemployment rate dropped to nine per cent in September, down from 10.2 per cent in August as the economy added 378-thousand jobs. London’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in September to 8.9 per cent. 4. The Middlesex-London Health Unit is again asking people to limit their Thanksgiving gatherings to those in their households to protect loved ones. The health unit is also asking people to avoid non-essential travel to COVID-19 hotspots which include Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. 5. The United Nations' World Food Program has won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity around the world. See more

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) reported 11 new COVID-19 cases for the region yesterday, the same day that two new cases within schools were reported. The Thames Valley District School Board has sent members of the Traumatic Events Response Team to Parkside Collegiate in St. Thomas to support staff and students, after a student, Branden Pettit, was left ...brain dead following a fall from his skateboard. 3. The City of London is extending temporary rules allowing outdoor patios to stay open until Dec. 31. The move is designed to help local businesses continue throughout the pandemic. 4. More relatives and loved ones can now apply to travel to Canada. Ottawa is to release criteria today for applications from relatives including siblings and grandparents of Canadians, romantic partners for more than a year and those seeking entry on compassionate grounds. 5. The vice presidential debate had sharp moments, some modest interruptions and violations of the debate clock. But the dynamics between Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Kamala Harris represented a rare return to some semblance of normal presidential politics. COVID-19 was a hot topic at the debate.
