Q: What is an HA filler? I hear lots of different names. Are they all the same? . Dr. Kadlubowska: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component of healthy skin. It provides structure, but also has a role in hydrating the skin. It is hydrophilic, meaning that it attracts and absorbs water. . Hyauluronic acid can be applied topically, or it can be injected under the skin, in which case it is termed a dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is cross-linked to allow it to resist degradat...ion (un-crosslinked HA would degrade within hours of being injected by your body’s own hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA), and to allow it to last several months before being degraded. Usually effects can last 6-12 months or even longer in some individuals. . Fillers can differ in their viscosity - some are softer and some are sturdier - and this will help determine where they are injected. For example, a sturdier filler would be used to enhance cheekbones and a softer filler under the eyes.
