My 1957 Hayes that I bought in 1965 before I ran south. This was Carson’s 134 originally. I was on with British Pacific Transport and I had bought the truck fro...m them. They would get your down payment and finance the balance for you. 32 cents a mile for the truck. Lots of work for the first 3 months or so then the work would slow down till you couldn’t make your truck payments and they would reposess the truck and do it again to somebody else. I had heard rumors and when it started happening to me , I paid them out and pulled the truck off. I had this truck for a couple more years and would work with the truck for anybody that would hire me. Boris Reefer, Jimmy Clark, Public Freightways or anybody. I always had trouble finding insurance because they all said I was too young to drive. I said, gimme the insurance and get outa my way. I have a license and quit telling me what I can’t do. I look back on those days fondly though and consider it my apprenticeship. See more

VC Produce Express. Johnny Stinn’s outfit. I drove the cab over. I also made numerous trips with The Little Brown Jug, a 1957 conventional KW with a 280 Cumm...ins and a five and four and really really long legs. We hauled produce outa California to Slade & Stewart in Prince Rupert and fish outa BC Packers in Rupert to Steveston BC or to customers in San Francisco or the LA area. If we unloaded fish in Steveston we would then load peat moss in Delta to hundreds of nurseries in California. 1 round trip a week. Sometimes we would have as many as 20 pickups all over California to get our northbound load. I was younger then. I sure miss those days sometimes. See more
