Crafty hump day! While you can recycle #2 HDPE plastic municipally, you can also upcycle! In honour of spring, a DIY for all you aspiring green thumbs: mini planters. Materials needed:... Plastic supplement bottle Exacto knife Potting soil Seedling Wash and dry bottle. Peel off label Using exacto knife, cut top 1-2 inches off of bottle (at your own risk - please be careful!) Make a whole in bottom for water drainage. Fill with potting soil and seedling. Place in appropriate sunlight. Most supplement bottles are #2 HDPE plastic, which is generally considered safe, in regards to leaching, than other forms. Concerned about estrogenic chemicals? Use these upcycled planters for non-consumable plants only.
Waste-not Wednesdays. Vitamins and supplements may be a boon for healthy living, but the reality is many products are packaged in plastic. For those endeavouring to live a healthy lifestyle, this fact can be at odds with their beliefs. For the most part, the plastic used for supplement and protein powder packaging is #2 HDPE food grade plastic. This is a low leaching, highly recyclable form of plastic. #2 plastic is accepted by most municipal curb side recycling programs in ...Canada. Check out Alan Greene M.D's blog at webmd.com for a concise overview on the different classes of consumer plastic: https://blogs.webmd.com/health-eh//know-your-plastics.html How do you deal with your plastic footprint? Any ideas, workarounds or suggestions? We’d love to hear them - let us know in the comments. We’ll share some of our own insights in upcoming posts. Photo used via a CC0 license.

We’re very big fans of baking soda based deodorants for the length and strength of their underarm odour coverage. However, many of those formulas contain oil, and if you have a penchant for wearing delicate fabrics such as silk or cashmere, oil based does can stain (more on this in a later post). Enter #drmist. A sodium chloride based deo spray with decent coverage, this deodorant spray is not prone to staining clothing. ... Comes in a handy spray, easy to toss into a gym bag or a carryon (it’s under that 100ml mark!). Available now at #a1nutrition

We carry Shea butter and its cousin, Shea oil! Great for diy skincare, soap making or for direct application. One of the questions we often get is what is the difference between Shea butter and oil? Shea oil is a byproduct of Shea butter production and has a higher oleic oil composition. Available now at #a1nutritiongrant
Shea butter is a well known skincare ingredient especially great for Winnipeg winters. Found in 19 countries in the Savannah belt of Africa, it the is fat extracted from the shea nut that comprises shea butter. The word Shea is derived from the Bambara word shiyiri.... High in oleic, stearic and linoleic acids, Shea is very nourishing for skin and hair. Shea butter is naturally yellow - refining it results in a whiter colour.
