It is with deep sadness we share the passing of a dear friend and colleague, Faduma Nkrumah. To Sonia, our AWA founder, she was fondly known as Mama Nkrumah. Sonia recalls " She was such a humble, spirited and lovable personality. She was fun that she would make me laugh...until I plea for mercy. It is a huge loss for the the entire African artists' scene in Toronto and beyond." The Somali musical legend succumbed to COVID-19 in Mogadishu, Somali earlier today. ... May Your Soul Rest in Peace Mama Nkrumah! #fadumankrumah #somalimusic #somalisinger #somalidancer #somaliartist #somalipoet #africanartist

Black History Month Blitz Jean Augustine The Honourable Jean Augustine, P.C., C.M., O.Ont, C.B.E., is the reason we celebrate Black History Month in Canada. As a Grenadian-Canadian, she worked her way through Toronto Teacher’s College, a Bachelor of Arts from University of Toronto and eventually a Master’s in Education. ... She made history becoming the first African-Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons a s Member of Parliament from the G.T.A.’s Etobicoke-Lakeshore constituency from 1993 to 2006. As Dr. Augustine served as a Member of Parliament, one of multiple accomplishments was legislative support passing the historic motion designating February as Black History Month in Canada. In 2007 she led the provincial initiative to commemorate the 200-year anniversary of the Abolition of the 1807 British Slave Trade Act. Some of the notable awards Jean has received are the UNIFOR Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award and named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women. The Jean Augustine Secondary School in Brampton, ON bears her name along with the Jean Augustine Girl’s Academy of the Toronto District School Board; the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment; the Jean Augustine Park on Lakeshore Boulevard and in Vaughan there’s the Jean Augustine Complex and the Jean Augustine District Park. In 2009 she was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada, in 2012 received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, in 2014 Jean was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 2020 appointed to the Order of Ontario. Dr. Augustine funds a total of three annual scholarships: George Brown for single mothers; Centennial College for young entrepreneurs and Humber College for community studies students. Question: As a fellow Canadian, which of the Honourable Jean Augustine's many accomplishments are you most proud of? #canadianblackhistorymonth #jeanaugustine #grenadiancanadian #grenadianimmigrantwomen #AWA #etobicokelakeshore #abolitionof1807britishslaveact
