THANK YOU to those who attended and spoke at our World AIDS Day zoom gathering! We had to do things a little different this year, but it was lovely to be able to gather virtually to commemorate the day. Thank you to the dignitaries that were in attendence or offered words of support for World AIDS Day, Red Scarf Day and Day Without Art. Another huge thank you to all our phenomenal volunteers who have donated so much time to knit, deliver and distribute the red scarves.... #WorldAIDSDay #WAD2020 #RedScarfDay #DayWithoutArt

A share from our friends at Gay Men's Sexual Health Alliance on this Transgender Day Of Remembrance. #TDoR2020
Today is International Human Rights Day - wrapping up our 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. It also marks the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaimed by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. The Declaration was an ambitious document that promised equal rights for every person, including the right to health, to security of the person, and a standard of living adequate for health and well-being. For many women, particul...arly WHAI priority populations of women, this Declaration has little meaning and although overall rates of violence against women are decreasing, certain types of violence - intimate partner violence, for example - tend to increase during periods of crisis and uncertainty, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Today and always, we are committed to fighting for equal rights for every person, including the right to health, to security of person, and a standard of living adequate for health and well-being. These are important realities for women in Northern Ontario.

November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. As said by founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith: "Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice." #transawarenessweek2020 #TransDayofRemembrance
Today, November 20, is #TransDayOfRemembrance. Today, we remember all of those who were taken too early, be it due to violence, depression, overdose, or COVID-1...9. The importance of this day, especially this year, feels immeasurable. At a time where our collective ability to mourn has been disrupted, we seek different and brave new ways to love and care for each other. In this #throwback, more relevant than ever even today, our community members share what #TDoR means to them. See more

Economic insecurity in Northern Ontario has a significant impact on women. Many communities have fewer opportunities for work and rely on a single industry. This can make women’s economic security more vulnerable when things change. In Thunder Bay, for example, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 60% of women lived below the poverty line (Low Income Measure). In addition, provincially, Indigenous women have much higher unemployment rates than non-Indigenous women, and are pai...d 35% less than non-Indigenous men. COVID-19 has increased the already considerable economic pressures that women face in the North. Women are more likely to work in lower paid sectors; they are more likely to have lost work during COVID-19; and they are more likely to still be working fewer hours and making less money than they were pre-COVID-19. Women are also overrepresented in precarious work, and work that falls outside the formal economy such as sex work, migrant work, panhandling, and informal care work not covered by any economic subsidies and COVID recovery programs. Today, we honour women’s resilience to care for their communities, regardless of everything else happening in the world.
