The Business of the Week is Allan Radio & TV Service! This business was once located at 319 Main Street. The business closed in 1980 and the building was demolished in 1998. Some of our information is referenced from the Allan, Saskatchewan ‘Lots’ of History booklet (printed in 2000).

The Business of the Week this week includes all businesses once located at 302 Main Street! The first business to occupy these corner lots was A-Z Lumber (Allan-Zelma). Information on this particular business can be found on the post we made on June 15th, 2020. Other businesses that once operated on this lot were Kraft’s Shop-Rite and IGA. ... The original building on these lots was demolished in 1994, and the current Allan Elks and Royal Purple building was built. Today we are showcasing 225 Main Street! The Toronto-Dominion Bank first opened in June 1958 and operated only Monday-Thursday. In 1965 the building was moved a few lots to the south and they opened full-time Monday through Friday. ... Today we are highlighting 328 Main Street! The building was built by Isidore and Harold Kraft in 1981. Glen and Eileen Allen purchased the ‘Allan Bowl and Billiards’ in 1995 from the Kraft family and renamed the business the ‘Allan Bowl & Recreation Centre.’... The business was then purchased by Steve and Tonia Peters. Today we are showcasing 224 Second Avenue! 224 Second Avenue was the original location of Allan’s first Fire Hall built in 1912. The first floor of the building held the fire equipment and a jail cell, and the second floor was used as a meeting hall/entertainment centre. ... In 1913 the space was used as a classroom for 75-100 students. The Fire Hall building was purchased by Reg Ellis in April of 1955 for $400.00! Lots 38 to 40 were purchased in 1953 by Bill and Rose Schnitzler and this location has since been a residential property. Today we are highlighting businesses once located at 204 Main Street! There is a building at this location in photos of Allan from as early as 1908! The building had many owners from 1911 until 1923 when it was listed to John G. Klotz. ... Mr. Klotz worked in real estate, sold insurance, and was an agent for International Harvester. He retired in 1949 and moved to British Columbia. In 1950, Herb Dutertre and Lester Erixon went into partnership in the machine agency. A fire destroyed the garage part of the building and an office building was built so that gasoline sales could continue. Once the new garage was built, the office building was sold. Later the business was sold to J.F. Weninger, then Norton Foster, then Bob Lewicki, and lastly to a gentleman from Young. There is currently no building at this location and the property is owned by the Town of Allan. Our Business of the Week is the Allan Car Wash and Gas Bar located at 349 and 403 First Avenue! The car wash first opened on October 13th, 1976 and was built by Tom Brooks. The business has had many owners over the years! ... The gas pumps are not currently in operation. Today we are highlighting 320 Main Street! The original three thousand square foot building was built in 1966. The south side of the building was the location of the Royal Bank of Canada and the remaining area was a laundromat. ... In 1976 the building was purchased by Karl and Evelyn Opperman. It was renovated and became the new Four Season’s restaurant. In 1978 the restaurant was sold to Mama Ho but continued to operate under the same name. It was later operated by Jack and Chris Andreen until 1985 when it returned to Mama Ho. In April of 1999, the business was sold to Elmer and Vi Rathje and the new name was Vi’s Restaurant. The building has seen many changes over the years- most noticeably the exterior of the building. Since the release of the booklet, 320 Main Street has also been the location of Loco’s (restaurant), Family Tree (restaurant), and Allan Chinese Food Restaurant.

Today we are highlighting 211 Main Street! In 1920, James Quong operated a cafe at this location. The cafe burned down in the Main Street fire in April of 1936. ... In 1957, the village built a building specifically to house a fire truck. In 1972 a water line was installed to bring water directly from Saskatoon. The current building on this property is the Allan Water Works. Our information is referenced from the Allan, Saskatchewan ‘Lots’ of History booklet (printed in 2000).
Today we are highlighting 229 Second Avenue as our Business of the Week! The home was built in 1907 by George Forster. He established a flour and feed business. He eventually added an ice cream parlour and confectionary. In 1913, groceries were added and it continued to be a grocery store for many years. ... There were many changes in management over the years. The final owners of the business were the Wilfinger’s. The property is now solely residential. Today we are highlighting the businesses that were once located at 303 First Avenue! In 1937 Louis Boivin built his new garage here after his previous building burned down in the 1936 fire. Louis sold the building to Frank Scharbach in 1949 whose businesses included the Massey Ferguson and General Motors dealerships. ... Tom Wieler purchased the garage in 1972 and it became the Allan ESSO. Joe Welder had a tire business at this location as well. Around 1977, Jack Hauck (who owned Allan Sand & Gravel) purchased the building and added a redi-mix business. Joe Welder (his son-in-law) purchased the redi-mix business and Garage in 1979 and Jack continued with his sand and gravel business. Jack passed away in 1981 and in 1983 Mike and Maryanne Devine purchased the building. The Devine’s removed the second floor and made the main floor into a restaurant. Andy Wong purchased the restaurant and called it the A-1 Café. The café burned down in November of 1987. The Town of Allan currently owns the property. Today’s Business of the Week is the Diebert and Wald Store, which became Boechler’s Store. This building was originally built on a farm around 1906, moved into to town in 1908, and closed in 1999. Many of us remember buying groceries, hardware, alcohol, and lottery tickets at Boechler’s Store. The 1974 addition is still on the property, but the storefront has been demolished. We would like to thank and recognize our staff who worked at the Museum this summer! Congratulations to Kelsey, Laneise, and Megan for giving our visitors educational tours! Building cleanliness was a large priority this year and we thank you for your dedication to making the building a safe place for everyone. With the cancellations of our summer programs, our summer staff was able to catalogue many new artifacts and and update information from previous years. We wish the ladies the very best with their fall plans!

Today we are highlighting the Admore Co-op! On June 1st, 1963 the South Allan Co-op and the Allan Co-op amalgamated (however the two sites were run separately until 1970). On the morning of January 28th, 1970 the building at South Allan was moved to 105 First Avenue in Allan. ... In the late 1970’s a steel quonset was built on the south end of the store, which was used for lumber. In 1988 the steel building was moved from the south side of the store to the west side and is now used as a tire shop. The current Admore Co-op location is at 112 First Avenue! The new and current Admore Co-op building was built in 2002. The Admore Co-op sells gasoline, tires, hoses, hardware, groceries, liquor, paint, lottery tickets, etc. This information is from the Allan, Saskatchewan ‘Lots’ of History booklet (printed in 2000). Today we are highlighting the Allan Hotel! The Allan Hotel is the oldest building in Allan that is still running for the purpose to which it was built. The Allan Hotel has been a hotel since as early as 1910. It was originally owned by Mr. Thomas Murphy. Over the years there have been many families that have owned the hotel and run the attached restaurant. ... At present, both the Hotel and Restaurant are open for business! This week we have decided to share some of the history about the Allan Post Office at 218 Second Avenue. Here is a photo of the old Simmons School building as per a request we received. We invite you to come check out our school display for more information about our country schools.
Further to our previous post about what this object is, here is some more information! The dimensions are 7 x 3 1/4 x 3 3/4 tall (not including the handle). The handle moves back and forth, as shown in the photos. Unfortunately, there is no label or markings on it for any further clues. Thank you to those who have been giving suggestions! We have had some thoughts that it may be a cigarette roller, but we are still looking for more information as to how this would work.

Simmons School was the last of the country schools to close in 1970. Students from Simmons School went to either Allan School, Hanley School, or Young School. The New Simmons School (photo on the left) was built in 1952. The two room brick school in Allan was built in 1915 (photo on the right).

Today we are showcasing the major fire that took place on Main Street in Allan in April of 1936. We would like to note that that the barbershop (formerly at 209 Main Street) and the Allan Hotel next door were the only two buildings that survived the fire. All other buildings on the west side of Main Street were totally destroyed up until the current lot where the TD Bank used to be. After careful consideration with the best interest of our participants, community and staff in mind, the Allan Museum Board has made the very difficult decision to CANCEL the Children’s Hour program this year. We originally planned to go ahead with the program, as advertised in the July Allan Community Newsletter, but in light of the most recent protocols that must be in place due to COVID-19 we have had to reconsider. We will miss seeing our young participants every Wednes...day morning, but look forward to seeing them during their summer visits. For further information you can contact Shirley at 306-257-3511. We are excited to announce our Summer Raffle! Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Museum, the Municipal Office, and from Museum Board Members. The official draw date for the cash prizes is Wednesday October 7th at our Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue.
