Pelvic floor symptoms - Pelvic floor muscles are the layer of muscles that support the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, bowel and uterus. These muscles span to the bottom of the pelvis and provide support for the pelvic organs that lie in that area. -... Part of the pelvic floor’s duty is to wrap firmly around these passageways to help keep them shut. By working alongside the muscles for the anus (the anal sphincter) and urethra (the urethral sphincter), the pelvic floor muscles help prevent the uncontrolled release of feces and urine. - Most people with pelvic floor dysfunction don’t seek proper care for themselves. To put it into perspective, 1 in 10 Canadians experience incontinence, yet only 26% of those experiencing incontinence have consulted a healthcare professional about their symptoms. - Most pelvic floor dysfunction conditions are a result of pelvic floor muscles either being too weak (hypotonicity) or too tight (hypertonicity) Here are some tips you can start to do throughout your day: - 1. Breathing. Breathing is one of the first places I start with people when I see them. You want to focus on a full diaphragmatic breathing, feeling the breath side to side, front to back so the pelvic floor and diaphragm can move in a coordinated fashion. 2. Alignment. One of the exercises I give clients, that they both hate and love, is to bring their ribs over top of their hips, roll their shoulders down and back and feel like they are being pulled toward the ceiling from the top of their head EVERY time they walk through a doorway. You’d be surprised how many times a day you walk through a door frame! 3. Notice your seated posture. Mamas spend a lot of time hunched over while feeding and rocking baby. One of my favorite tricks is to take a rolled up towel to the small of the back to prevent slouching. It feels great to have a little support at the lower back too. 4. Practice core engagement. It really is not enough to practice engaging your core 10 times in the morning while lying down on your back.

Face masks when combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing, help slow the spread of the virus. The CDC updated its guidance to recommend widespread use of simple cloth face coverings to help prevent transmission of the virus by people who have COVID-19 but don't know it.- [] Surgical masks... -Also called a medical mask, a surgical mask is a loose-fitting disposable mask that protects the wearer's nose and mouth from contact with droplets, splashes and sprays that may contain germs. A surgical mask also filters out large particles in the air. Surgical masks may protect others by reducing exposure to the saliva and respiratory secretions of the mask wearer.- [] -N95 masks Actually a type of respirator, an N95 mask offers more protection than a surgical mask does because it can filter out both large and small particles when the wearer inhales. As the name indicates, the mask is designed to block 95% of very small particles. Some N95 masks have valves that make them easier to breathe through. With this type of mask, unfiltered air is released when the wearer exhales.- - [] -Cloth masks While surgical and N95 masks are in short supply and must be reserved for health care providers, cloth masks are easy to find and can be washed and reused. Asking everyone to wear cloth masks can help reduce the spread of the coronavirus by people who have COVID-19 but don't realize it. And countries that required face masks, testing, isolation and social distancing early in the pandemic seem to have had some success slowing the spread of the virus. Cloth masks are cheap and simple to make. Instructions are easy to find online. Masks can be made from common materials, such as sheets made of tightly woven cotton. The CDC website even includes directions for no-sew masks made from bandannas and T-shirts. Cloth masks should include multiple layers of fabric.

Physiotherapy and women - Physiotherapy’s longstanding affinity with biomedicine might well win out, but an equally powerful discourse running through these talks is the way gender issues have influenced the profession -... 2020 commemorates 102 years since the signing of the Representation of the People Act, which granted some British women (and more men) the right to vote. Sheila Rowbotham’s excellent Rebel Crossings offers a great account of this, and commemorates the significant victories achieved by many in the name of women’s suffrage - We often don’t realise quite how important women’s suffrage was to the founding of physiotherapy in the UK and how this shaped the model of the profession around the world in the coming decades. All of the founders of the Society of Trained Masseuses (STM) were independent women with ties to the suffrage movement. Rosalind Paget, one of the founders of the Society and a pioneer of the midwifery profession in Britain, was drawn, with her friends in the Midwives’ Institute, ‘from the same class background and had close friendship and family ties with the leaders of the women’s movement and with those who took an interest in social welfare issues’ (Hannan, 1997, p.84). Rosalind Paget later Dame Rosalind Paget was a niece of William Rathbone (1819-1902), the influential Member of Parliament, philanthropist, and close friend of Florence Nightingale. And Paget was also cousin to prominent suffragette Eleanor Rathbone (1872-1946) - -There have been many times in the history of physiotherapy where its women leaders battled against almost overwhelming misogyny: in fighting to legitimise their massage practices; in showing they could treat injured servicemen; in becoming the leaders of physical rehabilitation movement; and differentiating themselves from nursing and midwifery - -Still to this day, female healthcare professionals are less likely to be in management roles; more likely to in low-paid supporting roles; more likely to be held back from promotion if they take career breaks to have families; and significantly more likely to experience harassment and bullying in the workplace. International women’s day- -There have been many times in the history of physiotherapy where its women leaders battled against almost overwhelming misogyny: in fighting to legitimise their massage practices; in showing they could treat injured servicemen; in becoming the leaders of physical rehabilitation movement; and differentiating themselves from nursing and midwifery- -And still to this day, female healthcare professionals are less likely to be in management ...roles; more likely to in low-paid supporting roles; more likely to be held back from promotion if they take career breaks to have families; and significantly more likely to experience harassment and bullying in the workplace- -In recent years, physiotherapy scholars have paid a lot more attention to the gendered aspects of the profession. So perhaps 2018 affords us an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable women who made it possible for us all to be here today, and to remind ourselves that the battle for women’s suffrage has not yet been won.

Text Neck Syndrome - The term Text Neck’ was first coined by a US chiropractor Dr Dean L. Fishman. He referred Text Neck to be an injury caused by repetitive stress or overuse syndrome where your head and neck posture is stuck forward by looking at your phone for long hours. It is a cause of habitual and continuous alignment of ‘head-down’ posture. Eventual pain and incorrect posture at the neck leads to Text Neck Syndrome.- -... The more our head hangs forward, the more are forces and strain on your neck. This increases the curvature of spine at neck region. This kind of posture is called as ‘forward head posture’. Text Neck Syndrome causes further complications of posture like thoracic kyphosis which is increase convex curvature of upper back, protruded shoulders due to habitual posture, spasm in upper neck region muscles and weakness in lower neck muscles. Due to this compensatory and incorrect posture, the spine at neck region becomes painful. Over a period of time, this habitual posture might lead to formation of permanent deformity. Also forward head posture can be a cause of high risk of cervical spondilosis. - - You can prevent text neck syndrome by - 1. Watching from your posture- put the phone higher to your face, rather than looking down on it.- 2. Neck exercises and stretches which we can help you here @ Alpha physio @ Alpha Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre

The importance of walking and bone health - -The next time you have a check-up, don't be surprised if your doctor hands you a prescription to walk. Yes, this simple activity that you've been doing since you were about a year old is now being touted as "the closest thing we have to a wonder drug," in the words of Dr. Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of course, you probably know that any physical activity, including walk...ing, is a boon to your overall health. But walking in particular comes with a host of benefits -It eases joint pain Several studies have found that walking reduces arthritis-related pain, and that walking five to six miles a week can even prevent arthritis from forming in the first place. Walking protects the joints especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them.- -Bone density may not be one of the most exciting health benefits of walking, but it’s an important one. People with stronger bones avoid osteoporosis and all the problems that come with it like fractures, disability, and spine shrinkage (seriously, you can get shorter). And the best way to get strong, healthy bones is by doing weight-bearing exercises like running, dancing and, yes, walking, says the American Bone Health Association. Researchers found that walking programs that lasted more than six months were associated with significant and positive effects in bone density of the hip bone -Overall walking has tons of benefits as evident in this picture. Continue walking everyday and you will see yourself change and grow in ways you might have not thought possible
