Amherst Communities in Bloom- People, Plants and Pride...Growing Together. Welcome to Spring! Your Amherst Communities in Bloom Committee is excited to be participating in the Provincial competition this year. ... Communities in Bloom, is a non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement with a focus on enhancing green spaces in communities, by participating with other communities based on similar population size within their province. It’s not just about plants, it’s about people, pride, being good tidy neighbors, and true ambassadors of our area. Provincial judges will visit and evaluate Amherst this year, based on program criteria such as Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape, and Floral Displays. The judging in Amherst will take place on July 23rd- 24th, 2019. We are working in many areas of the town, with organizations and are also asking all businesses to be aware of this competition. Please think about how you can show off your business in its best light, by keeping your sidewalk swept, enhancing flower displays, making sure you have clean, bright and readable signs, maybe sprucing up areas with paint and general tidiness overall. We want Amherst to SHINE! PRIDE is contagious! We hope to show off our community as one that has civic pride, known for its tidiness and in a way to create beauty that enhances the lives of our community and all its visitors. Thank you for your time, we hope you give it some thought and how small enhancements to your space may make a difference. If you have any questions, please feel free to message us on Facebook, (at Amherst Communities in Bloom). We are also looking to expand our group, so please Like, and Share, our page, so that we continue to expand our size with good people willing to help Amherst. Thank you Amherst Communities in Bloom.

One of the most common questions our town horticulturist gets asked especially during this time of year, is what is the yellow bush? It is a Forsythia, an earl...y spring flowering shrub that puts on an impressive display of yellow blooms prior to its green leaves unfolding. The best time to prune your Forsythia, and other spring flowering shrubs, is after they have finished blooming. Forsythias make a great specimen planting and also make for stunning hedges. See more
