Warm up on cold days by reminiscing about summer at the Amherst Community Garden! Did you know? Snow can act as an insulator for your plants while they overwinter. A blanket of snow contains trapped air and the ground releases heat. This is beneficial when a bitter cold arrives.

This fall, all 7 classes of grade 8 students from E.B.Chandler Junior High School took part in various garden tasks at the Amherst Community Garden. Students were given an educational tour which highlighted the perennial garden, frost tolerant crops, seed dispersal mechanisms, and more! Then they got to work... Tasks completed include:... Collected remaining plant material for compost pile Added crab meal to compost pile Weeded to prep for garlic planting Mixed sheep manure and potting soil Applied soil amendments Incorporated crab meal to soil Dug evenly spaced holes for garlic Broke apart garlic bulbs into individual cloves Placed cloves into holes and covered Watered and labelled their garlic Covered with straw and secured with branches Garlic was planted in both rows and raised beds - we will find out which does better next fall! Each class worked on different tasks and next year the garlic will be harvested by the next year's grade 8 class. A big thank you to Ms. Cole and E.B. Chandler Junior High for promoting food literacy for youth in our community! #EBCGrows #EatLocalCumberland **Safety measures were applied due to Covid-19 which include sanitizing tools between classes, only one tool per student, no sharing of tools, etc.

Grade 8 garlic planting covered with straw for the winter! A big thank you to whoever added straw! I brought a straw bail to the garden today and completed the rest of the row plus the raised bed! Here’s hoping for a successful garlic harvest next year! Straw was also added around some shrubs and trees and there is a small amount left in the shed.... Eat Local Cumberland #ebcgrows
