Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Feb. 23, 2021, issued a public health order expanding the number of health professions who are able to administer a COVID-19 vaccine. Midwives, retired nurses, and nursing and midwifery students are among the regulated and unregulated health professionals listed in the order. The order sets out specific requirements, including that the immunization program must be approved by the medical health officer for that geographic area. It... sets out both the mandatory training that is required, as well as specific limits for the different health professions. Note that the order does not include current practising health professionals whose scope includes providing immunization services for the general population, such as practicing nurses (LPNs, NPs, RNs and RPNs). A NEW ERA IN REGULATION We are pleased to announce that the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) officially launches today, Sept. 1, 2020. The establishment of BCCNM marks an exciting new era in professional regulation: we are Canada's first nurse and midwife regulator, as well as western Canada's largest health professional regulator. Our new college is excited to build on the strong foundations of collaboration and partnership established by the former colleges: The Co...llege of Midwives of BC and the BC College of Nursing Professionals. We look forward to continuing to work with other regulators, health system partners and the public to build and deploy best practices in regulation. The creation of BCCNM is in line with the Ministry of Health's ongoing efforts to streamline and modernize health profession regulation in B.C. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the BC Government on this exciting work. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3behuD8
