Here’s a glimpse into one transplant family’s face off with COVID-19. Thank you Amanda and Transplant Research Foundation of BC for sharing this story with our community.

Sisters Reema and Binn are the perfect example that living organ donation works. Three years later, both are healthy and thriving. Binn’s energy levels are back and she has a whole new outlook on her future. It’s just nice to know that my sister has a piece of me in her that is making her well, smiles Reema. She hopes by participating in research and sharing their story, others will be inspired. The act of being able to save someone’s life is indescribable. I don’t know what else could top this. This really is the ultimate gift on all sides, and it’s fabulous. Read about how they're participating in an important study with Dr. Jagbir Gill to help culturally improve living donor information in South Asian communities. http://ow.ly/K1PJ50DWMrz

Do you know of a group, workplace, rotary or interested party wanting to learn more about organ donation and transplant? Send us a DM or email to [email protected] with your request and we’ll provide you with a speaker for your virtual event. Addison was recently invited to share her heart transplant experience with a Girl Guides group and we have many more volunteers who would be happy to share their story with you too.

We are highlighting four women in leadership on the BC Transplant team for this year’s #InternationalWomensDay. #IWD2021 Q: Share a women’s empowerment moment that inspires you. A: It’s been really inspiring to see so many women leading the pandemic response across Canada, including in BC. Half of Canada’s chief medical officers are women, which includes our own Dr. Bonnie Henry. I’ve also observed that many health authority leaders and key scientific and medical experts in ...BC including at the BCCDC are female scientists and doctors. This has been really wonderful to see, and I hope it inspires the next generation of women to seek careers in STEM and leadership roles. - Tina Robinson (Manager, Communications & Community Relations) Q: Why do you support women’s empowerment and gender quality? A: I think our society has made a lot of progress in terms of gender equality in the last couple of years. However, we should strive toward continuous progress. I think having more women in visible positions of leadership can really send a positive message to younger girls and allow them to believe in themselves. - Joanna Shi (Director, Business Planning) Q: What’s your International Women’s Day message? A: Sky’s the limit, so let nothing come in the way of your dreams and goals. - Parvind Grewal (Manager, Health Information Management) Q: What qualities make a great leader? A: A great leader is to be inclusive, objective and not afraid of change. Great leaders also tend to be effective communicators and equally important, good listeners. - Heidi Butler (Manager, Clinical Operations) Together we will celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. #ChooseToChallenge

Registering as an organ donor and giving the gift of life is one small thing we can do on #WorldKindnessDay. Without the kindness of our donors, donor families and living donors, our transplant community would not exist. #TakeTwoMinutes and think about how you can save lives, and register as an organ donor: www.taketwominutes.ca. #makekindnessthenorm

We’re helping to introduce Living Transplant a new podcast from the Ajmera Transplant Centre and the Centre for Living Organ Donation at UHN. Living Transplant takes listeners behind the scenes of the transplant program at Toronto General Hospital, exploring transplant through the perspectives of frontline staff and transplant pioneers, as well as transplant recipients, living organ donors, families and caregivers. Ultimately, the goal of Living Transplant is to normalize transplantation and encourage open and honest conversations about organ donation. Matthew calls his health post-transplant the best it’s been since he was 12 years old. It’s as if he now has zero physical limitations a feeling he is unable to put into words. Returning as a paramedic has been incredible, I feel my insight from being a patient is invaluable, both in knowledge gained and empathy. It’s also a great feeling to give back.
