Education isn't always easy. Sometimes the battle isn't learning anew, but it is un-learning old habits and well-ingrained patterns of behaviour and thought. I just completed the four-day Advanced ADR Workshop today at the Stitt Feld Handy Group (I completed the ADR Workshop last month). Whatever praise I had last month for the first program was understated. Though not everyone wants to learn about mediation the way that I did, this program was so much more than that and it ...helped me to understand more than simply dispute resolution. It helped me to better understand my clients in my role as lawyer, to understand litigants when I act as a Deputy Judge in Small Claims Court or as a mediator, and also to understand myself and my own style as a mediator, lawyer and judge. It tested my strengths and highlighted areas where I can grow and improve. It was about learning new ways to think. I was again surrounded by incredible instructors (Elinor Whitmore, Rosanne Fitzgerald and Oliver Martin), great support staff and coaches, and a few old and many new wonderful classmates.
