Happy publication day to AGAINST AMAZON AND OTHER ESSAYS by Jorge Carrión! Get your copy now at your local bookstore A history of bookshops, an autobiography of a reader, a travelogue, a love letterand, most urgently, a manifesto. Good bookshops are questions without answers. They are places that provoke you intellectually, encode riddles, surprise and offer challenges A pleasing labyrinth where you can’t get lost: that comes later, at home, when you immerse yourself i...n the books you have bought; lose yourself in new questions, knowing you will find answers. Jorge Carrión Picking up where the widely acclaimed BOOKSHOPS: A READER’S HISTORY left off, AGAINST AMAZON AND OTHER ESSAYS explores the increasing pressures of Amazon and other new technologies on bookshops and libraries. In essays on these vital social, cultural, and intellectual spaces, Jorge Carrión travels from London to Geneva, from Miami’s Little Havana to Argentina, from his own well-loved childhood library to the rosewood shelves of Jules Verne’s Nautilus and the innovative spaces that characterize South Korea’s bookshop renaissance. Including interviews with writers and librariansincluding Alberto Manguel, Iain Sinclair, Luigi Amara, and Han Kang, among othersCarrion illuminates the spaces that transform reader’s lives. Stay tuned for the virtual book launch on November 30 (Cyber Monday) at 7 PM EST! We’ll be celebrating with several of our favourite bookstores (including Shelf Life Books, Glass Bookshop, The Bookshelf, Porter Square Books, & Deep Vellum Books) as we discuss the book and why people should support independent bookstores instead of Amazon. You can also order online for pick-up or delivery from our website: https://biblioasisbookshop.com/ ABOUT BOBBY ORR AND THE HAND-ME-DOWN SKATES: Even hockey legends start... with hand-me-downs. A beautifully illustrated true childhood story about hockey great Bobby Orr. Bobby eats, sleeps and breathes hockey. So when his birthday is coming up, he only wants one thing: new skates. He's seen the exact pair he wants in the shop window: sparkling blades, shiny leather, clean new laces tied in perfect bows. But when Bobby opens his gift, he's dismayed to find hand-me-down skates: scuffed leather, nicked blades, floppy laces. Once Bobby breaks them in, though, he and the hand-me-down skates become inseparable, and he can't imagine life without them . . . until the brand-new skates come into his life. How can he leave his hand-me-down skates behind? Log Driver's Waltz illustrator Jennifer Phelan brings this classic story to life with timeless, gorgeous art, and Kara Kootstra's words evoke the joy and dedication that Bobby Orr brought to his favorite sport. A perfect gift for readers and fans big and small, this book is destined to be a classic that is reached for time and time again. ABOUT JAY VERSUS THE SAXOPHONE OF DOOM: Who knew grade six music could be so scary? For kids who love The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Dork Diaries comes a hilarious new entry into funny middle-grade novels. Jay Roberts loves hockey. He's good at it. He also loves his hockey hero, Bobby Orr, considered a legend by Jay's grandfather. In fact, even though they may bicker, when it comes to the Bruins, the whole family agrees that they are the team to root for. When it comes to hockey, Jay's a team player, but there's one person who seems determined to make life hard for Jay: his classmate and fellow team member, Mick Bartlet. It's a good thing Jay can usually stickhandle his way out of his bullying. But something else is determined to make Jay's life difficult, something far harder for Jay to play: the saxophone. Sixth grade just became a whole lot more challenging ...

Join us for a live conversation with Steven Heighton, discussing Reaching Mithymna, hosted by Rhonda Douglas. Presented in partnership with the Ottawa Internati...onal Writer’s Festival and Library and Archives Canada. In the fall of 2015, Steven Heightonwinner of the Governor General’s Award for Poetry and four gold National Magazine Awardsmade an overnight decision to travel to the frontlines of the Syrian refugee crisis in Greece and enlist as a volunteer. He arrived on the isle of Lesvos with a duffel bag and a dubious grasp of Greek, his mother’s native tongue, and worked on the landing beaches and in OXYa jerrybuilt, ad hoc transit camp providing simple meals, dry clothes, and a brief rest to refugees after their crossing from Turkey. In a town deserted by the tourists that had been its lifeblood, Heightonalongside the exhausted locals and under-equipped international aid workersfound himself thrown into emergency roles for which he was woefully unqualified. From the brief reprieves of volunteer-refugee soccer matches to the riots of Camp Moria, Reaching Mithymna is a firsthand account of the crisis and an engaged exploration of the borders that divide us and the ties that bind. We encourage our audiences to read widely, and shop (or borrow) locally. A limited number of signed books are available from our friends at Perfect Books.

Congratulations to Biblioasis author Steven Heighton whose book Reaching Mithymna is a finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction!
