Creating a 4’ Round Burl Table This piece was ordered as a custom commission for our client in Ontario! The top is created from buckeye burl and turquoise resin. The base is solid ash with a Shou Sugi Ban finish. Both buckeye burl and the Shou Sugi Ban X bases have become some of our most popular options. Our supply of Buckeye is limited as these pieces were salvaged from an Orchard that was being cleared and regenerated!

Figured Maple Dining Cabinet This piece was commissioned by a repeat customer in NYC. This will be the third Black Forest piece in their home. They already have a matching dining table and buckeye burl coffee table! This cabinet is the largest we have done to date and we thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece. The entire cabinet carcass constructed using solid Canadian maple, no veneer or plywood was used anywhere. We utilized our signature sliding dovetail construction to assemble the cabinet.

Casting Black Walnut in 105L of Resin This piece is a custom commission for some local clients! They selected two slabs of black walnut from the outside of the log to give them maximum live edge character on the surface. Slabs like this are harder to come by as there is usually only two like it in every log! After pouring, we will allow the resin to cure for a week before removing it from the mould and machining it.... The long cure time of our Black Forest Deep Resin allows us to complete pours like this in a single shot without bubbles! See more

Curly Maple Wall Art with LEDs This piece is a custom commission for our clients home on Vancouver Island. The piece is made from salvaged Big Leaf Maple and 60L of our Black Forest Deep Resin. We sanded to 4000 grit and finished with Osmo and our new Black Forest Ceramic. We only sand to 4000 grit for wall art, as sanding higher slightly compromises durability.... The LEDs for this project were sourced from @utechnologycorp The lights can be controlled from anywhere in the house with a wireless remote! See more

We designed these custom chairs in solid black walnut as a part of a full house furniture package for a client in Colorado. We're so happy with the way the back slats came out on this chair. We've given them a curve that follows the spine, they're just thin enough so they will flex and not break. We were surprised at how comfortable this chair is!

Creating a desk with decayed walnut This desk was a custom commission for our local Calgary client. They selected a heavily decayed slab of bastogne walnut and paired it with tinted resin. They've decided on resin cast legs to pair with it. Our books are quickly filling into early 2021. Current orders are beginning to book into spring. We cannot express enough how grateful we are for all of the support we have received, thank you all!

Black Walnut Dining Table delivered to Colorado We created this dining table with salvaged walnut for our clients vacation home. We paired the slab with tinted resin and steel X legs. Fun Fact: The black stain seen in the lower left hand corner of the table is caused by metal that was attached to the tree at some point during its life. As the wood rusts, it creates iron oxide which reacts with the tannins in the wood, staining it black. Most of our wood is salvaged, meani...ng that rather than coming from forests, it's usually from private properties who need to remove trees for various reasons, often because they're sick or causing a hazard. This also means that we end up finding whatever the owners may have attached to the tree when we mill the log. In this case, all we found were some nails, likely left from clothes lines. However, we have found things as wild as a car alternator in a log. These salvaged logs, and ultimately the tables themselves, always have a story to tell. See more

Buckeye Burl Coffee Table with White Oak Legs This is our first piece we have completed from our recent order of Buckeye burl from @gl_veneer., we are blown away by the character! These slabs of buckeye that we brought in are peppered with cracks and voids, perfect for resin cast tables! If you'd like one of your own, please visit our website to submit a quote form via our table gallery. We currently have about 20 of these slabs remaining!

Oiling a figured maple dining table This dining table is a part of a furniture package that also includes a coffee table and a dining room cabinet. This is the first table we have made with slabs from this salvaged eastern maple tree. The shape of this tree is very irregular, making it perfect for resin cast pieces. Since the slabs were so heavily decayed, we saturated the surface with our coat epoxy prior to sanding and finishing. This hardens the surface making it more suitable for a dining table.

Start to Finish - $9,000 Coffee Table For this coffee table we got to try something completely different! Instead of our standard wood or steel legs, this client let us create custom resin and wood legs. The resin in the legs was pigmented to match the table top and the wood is cut from the same tree. The full how-to version explaining our entire process is also on our YouTube channel (Black Forest Wood Co.) We see this style becoming very popular!

Casting Claro Walnut Burls for a Custom Cabinet We were commissioned to build a custom cabinet that our client purchased as a gift to her husband. The face of the cabinet will feature our premium claro walnut burl and smoky grey resin. Although these pieces are very porous there is no need to seal the edges using our resin. If you de-gas the resin and cool it while it cures you will end up with a bubble free pour.

This slab of bastogne walnut was cut from a heavily decayed tree that was salvaged before it was chipped. The slab itself measured in at over 4 thick. We were able to pour the resin to cast this piece in one step, using our water-cooled moulds. This table is also the first piece that we have ever sent to Trinidad! Over the past few months we have actually seen a trend of more tables sales in places beyond North America.

Solid walnut exterior door ready for finishing! The entire unit is constructed from only solid materials, no particle board or veneer has been used. To finish, we use plant based oils and waxes, topped with a ceramic coating. Oils and waxes allow an easily maintainable finish that will not flake or peel over time. We also apply a ceramic coating, which gives an added level of UV protection and water resistance.

De-gassing epoxy with vacuum We recently received our new vacuum chamber to help release additional bubbles from the epoxy. Our epoxy usually dries crystal clear on its own as it is formulated to release bubbles. However, sometimes when mixing large volumes some bubbles can be introduced by the mixer. By using the vacuum chamber it effectively removes all bubbles caused by mixing and leaves you with a crystal clear pour.

Casting cottonwood burl in 45L of resin This slab of cottonwood is being used for our client's new desk in New Mexico. The resin is pigmented smoky grey and the top will be paired with solid steel legs. These slabs are heavily decayed making them perfect candidates to be cast in resin. We hope you enjoy this video, it shows our chair assembly process after the components have been milled on the CNC. They were custom designed specifically to our clients' specs. The chair construction is composed of black walnut using wenge to secure the joinery. Our client requested Italian Euro-Soft leather upholstery. We finish with Osmo Polyx and top coat with our new ceramic coating. We will also be applying a textile coating to the leather that we are experimenting with for added durability. As always, we use Titebond II to glue everything together. You can find it available on our site!

We were commissioned to build a large piece of wall art for our clients' home in San Francisco. The piece is made from highly figured fir burl which was paired with copper epoxy. We polished this piece to 4000 grit before finishing to give it a high gloss. We do not recommend this for tables but it works well for wall art as they will not see the kind of wear and tear a table will.

L shaped river desk with LED lights This custom desk will be shipped down to our client in Colorado. Although this desk looks finished we actually are not 100% happy with the stability of the piece. Casting maple in transparent resin This 3.5 thick quilted maple slab is being used for a custom dining table that will be shipped to Montana. To achieve the best results, we de-gas our resin prior to pouring to eliminate any air bubbles caused by mixing. We also use a water cooled mould that slows the cure and allows any air trapped within the wood time to rise. Another method of reducing air bubbles that many use is sealing the edge with epoxy prior to the pour. This method... is much cheaper to attain and works well to prevent bubbles from coming out of the wood. However, in our experience, sealing the edge significantly weakens the bond as no epoxy can actually soak into the wood, therefore we strongly advise people not to seal edges. See more
