MOST UNWANTED: November Edition Part 2 WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT ATTENTION HUNTERS Item: Animal Carcasses ... Result: Health and Safety issues for our employees, very dirty working conditions As another hunting week approaches, the Bluewater Recycling Association is very concerned that we will once again be seeing dead animal carcasses come through our facility. YES, this does happen, as shown in the pictures below. It isn’t always a hunted animal. We have received roadkill, and livestock in our blue box material. Either way, this is NOT ACCEPTABLE! Hunters should be aware and abide by the rules and regulations for proper disposal of their game. Residents should contact their municipality for proper disposal/removal of roadkill. Dead animals can expose our handlers to diseases, sharp teeth or even claws. Not to mention that it is quite disgusting having to handle something of this nature. Please help in keeping our employees safe.

The Bluewater Recycling Association and all our employees would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween. Keep in mind that pumpkins are NOT recyclable and should NOT be disposed of in your recycling bin. They are however biodegradable. Even if you do not have a dedicated compost pile, you can still compost your old pumpkin.....just bury it in your garden. Be sure to remove all the seeds, or you may end up with a pumpkin patch next year! Otherwise, your old pumpkin should be disposed of in your waste bin.

If today is the collection day for your area, the Association has dispatched its assets to provide the service as planned, however, as a result of COVID, prime vacation period, and unexpected injuries, we do not have as many vehicles on the road as we normally would like. This means your collection today may occur at a different time than normal and it may occur in an unconventional way. You may be used to have your waste and recycling bin emptied at the same time (in diff...erent compartments) with the same truck. However, today you may have one vehicle empty your waste bin and another empty your recycling bin at a later time, or vice versa. Please leave your containers at the curb so we can service you. If you have not been serviced by 6:00 pm, we are probably not coming today. Please report the missed collection at 1-800-265-9799 ext. 228 or email [email protected]. Thank you for your understanding.

MOST UNWANTED: July Edition - Part 2 Item: SCRAP STEEL Result: $15,000 in repairs... Seen here as car struts, filing cabinets or wash machine tubs, these items cannot be put in household recycling bins because they can injure our employees or cause significant damage to our equipment. Just recently we had a towel bar go through our facility and it alone caused approximately $15,000 in damage as it ripped a strip right off a major conveyor belt and caused 4 hours downtime in the plant. If you encounter any of these item, please recycle at your local landfill: All metal except car parts are accepted. Some restriction may apply. Another option: Look in the Yellow Pages under "Scrap Metal" for drop-off locations, dealers may pay market prices.

The cost set and charged by your municipality is for the collection service. Your wheelie bins remain the PROPERTY OF BRA.... Therefore, when you move to a new home, your bins remain at your previous residence. Although the bins are our property, we do ask that you take care of them as if they were your own. Bluewater Recycling Association 10.03.2020

Today is world environment day and as result we want to talk about the changes in waste generation we have been seeing during the Pandemic. Since the week of March 9th data has been tracked and compared to the same period in 2019.While certain waste management restrictions remain in place, there still has been an increase in materials residents are hauling to the curb every week. Overall WASTE COLLECTED IS UP 12% over last year and Recycling is consistent with prior year. ...Recycling tonnage coming in has not increased. This is partly caused by a change in composition (no flyers, but extra plastic containers), but it is also the result of more CONTAMINATION. As people do spring cleanup, they are WISHFULLY recycling everything they find and then some. Likewise, because the waste bin is now full, the rest is placed in the recycling bin. This very is disrespectful to our employees that come to work everyday and sort through this mess to try to recover as much recyclable material as possible. Please really take the time to consider what you are doing with your material, if something is going in your recycling bin, is it truly recyclable (please refer to our acceptables list if you have any questions), if your throwing something in the waste bin, is it truly waste, do you have another use for it, could someone else use it. We need to spend the extra time thinking about the material we throw in our bins and what purpose they serve, for our environment and for our employees here at BRA.

MOST UNWANTED: April Edition Item: SWORD?!?!?!!? Result: Luckily this items was found before going through our machinery or it could have caused expensive damage to our machines and SERIOUS Health and Safety issues for our employees.... Please note that something that might be recyclable is not necessarily acceptable in the blue box program. Let me explain. Just because something is made of metal and may be perfectly recyclable at a local scrap yard, does not mean it is acceptable in the blue box for recycling. Placing pots and pans, bake ware, chains, electrical extension cords, nuts and bolts, etc. in the blue boxes simply adds to the contamination and down time in the processing facility. This also has the potential to add risk of injury for our employees. If you are ever unsure of whether something should go into the blue box or not, please refer to our material guide at : https://www.bra.org/material-guide/ Also, remember second hand stores are also a great option for unique items like this sword :)

Please STOP Hoarding! People are currently hoarding because of COVID-19 for fears of shortages when really their panic is fulfilling this prophecy. William Rathje, arguably the greatest garbologist of all time, studied residents waste to examine patterns of consumption. Before his research, people assumed that during times of economic hardship people will waste less expensive food. However his project proved the exact opposite. "When resources are scarce, people tend to buy ...larger quantities of -for example- beef-meat, when they are on sale, only to end up throwing it out again as they have bought too much to consume before the expiration dates". Therefore, hoarding during this uncertain time will just take those essential items away from people that truly need them and in the end increase the amount of material going to the landfill. Please purchase responsibly, we are all in this together! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucson_Garbage_Project

COVID-19 Update As of today, waste and recycling services have been deemed an essential service, therefore we can continue to provide you the same great service you have come accustomed to even during this period of uncertainty. We are closely monitoring the situation and will do everything in our power to continually adapt our business processes as necessary. To ensure the safety of our employees, we do have some NEW guidelines for safe waste disposal during global COVID-1...9 pandemic: 1) Place used tissues and napkins in a CLOSED garbage BAG then place in your WASTE bin. 2)IF YOU ARE SICK: place ANY item that has come into contact with your mouth, nose or eyes into the garbage even items that you normally place into your recycling bin (eg. water/beverage bottles, pop cans, etc.). 3) Our drivers have been instructed NOT to pick up loose material that has fallen out of your bins as a safety precaution. To help prevent the tipping of bins, please ensure your bins are at least 3 feet apart from each other. If there is a day of HIGH WINDS, if possible leave your bins inside, if its necessary to set them out, you can turn the rear wheels on an angle towards to wind which helps to stop the bin from blowing over. 4)Our office is currently closed to any public drop off of material Please stay safe!

Luckily our driver acted quickly and was able to drive to the local fire station where the firemen where able to put the fire out before any serious injuries occurred. If you have ashes to dispose of, ashes may go into the waste bin however they MUST be COMPLETELY COOLED, DAMPENED, and boxed or bagged before being put inside. Unfortunately, we find far to often that our wheelie bins are being melted or material in our trucks has caught fire because people are putting HOT ashes into their bin. Please help keep our employees safe and our damages down by properly disposing of your material. For other flammable material, the items should be dropped off at your local landfill or taken to a hazardous waste depot depending on the material. Please see our website for more information on specific items. https://www.bra.org/material-guide/
