When I was younger, I was in the Kamloops Thompson Honour Choir. For what felt like many years, at the end of the season we would sing this piece called "Sing" ...by Gary Barlow. I remember the first year we sang it, I sang the opening solo. That evening, before the concert after the dress rehearsal, mom and I sat outside the Sagebrush Theatre eating dinner, as we had no time to catch a bus down the hill and back up again. I remember that evening very clearly, as the Fine Arts coordinator at the time had been headed into the Sagebrush when he stopped to speak to me. He said, "Is your name Miranda?" and I said, "That's me." And he responded, "Miranda, we are lucky to have a confident leader like you singing in our choirs." That was Don Bennett. Then when I got a bit older, I remember a friend of mine and I had an SD73 Honour Choir performance to go to. That night it was POURING rain, and my friends mom didn't feel comfortable driving through down town. And so, Mr. Bennett drove to her house, picked us up, and took us to the concert. And then when I performed my first solo piece with the Kamloops Brandenburg Orchestra, Don was there. He came to me after the performance and he said, "What a beautiful thing it is to have a young musician like you singing freely and confidently." I may not have known Don for as long as some others, and maybe wasn't as close with him, but I've never lost anyone so influential, and encouraging to my development as a musician and as a human being. I've been struggling to find words to articulate how much I appreciated his support, so I'm giving up on that and instead showing it the best way I know how to: through song. So Don, Carson and I have created this tribute in your honour. I have come full circle to sing the song I performed when I first met you. Thanks for being a great teacher. #SongForDon
