This is Treaty Recognition Week. It is a time we can recognize the importance of our Indigenous friends and neighbours and the relationships established with th...em. We have much educating to do. Take the time this week to read a book, read articles and value land and our wildlife corridors where we live. We are all Treaty People. See more

Haldimand Treaty, signed October 25, 1784 by Sir Frederick Haldimand. For #treatyrecognitionweek we wanted to share insights into an important treaty for the lo...cal community. In exchange for their service to the British during the American Revolution, six miles on each side of the Grand River was granted to Six Nations. "allotting to them for that purpose, six miles deep from each side of the river beginning at Lake Erie and extending in that proportion to the head of said river, which them and their posterity to enjoy forever" - Sir Frederick Haldimand Replica from the permanent collection at the Woodland Cultural Centre museum

Always on bird alert! During a recent virtual meeting, one of our ecologists spotted a purple finch at one of his feeders. This was no ordinary finch. It had a ...leg band! He grabbed his camera and started taking photos. Amazingly, using the photo series he was able to piece together the number on the band. Over 1.2 million birds are banded in Canada and the United States each year. However, less than 1 per cent of songbird bands are recovered. Data from reported bands help researchers better understand, monitor and manage migratory bird populations by providing information about species distribution and movement. Your contribution is important! Report any banded birds you spot to http://reportband.gov/. As a thank you, you will receive a certificate with information about when and where your bird was banded.
