Breastfeeding Art Expo

The Breastfeeding Art Expo included art from many locations all across Interior Health region. The Expo travelled to 6 locations: Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton Indian Band, Trail, Williams Lake and Kamloops. So it is fitting, that the art has been donated to many locations across the region. A Guide for Art and Health Community Projects Steps to Success. This guide is for you is you are a professional artist, or a community non-profit organization, an Indigenous group, health organization, or business wanting to do an art project on any health topic. It is based on the experiences of the Breastfeeding Art Expo and is a framework of twenty steps. The challenges and successes of our project have informed and helped create this guide. Please share with community organizations.

Project Final Evaluations are posted at www.breastfeedingartexpo.ca. Please check out the website to see the Breastfeeding Art Expo Final Report & Evaluation, the Social Network Analysis Map (it’s really cool, take a peek at it; you’ll have to enlarge it on your screen), the results of the Visitor Surveys and a summary of the comments made on Sticky Notes and in the Art Expo Guest Books.

Celebrate Breast Milk art piece available for free donation The art piece Celebrate Breast Milk is available for donation by the artist Rick Durand. It is a mixed media (using a nursing bra) whimsical guy’s look at breastfeeding. It was a wonderful art piece in the Art Expo but doesn’t quite fit for our hospital and health office donations. If you have a midwifery office or other office where you think it would bring some smiles, or you would like to hang it in your home send... [email protected] a compelling reason why you think you should be the recipient of this art piece. Requests will be forwarded to the artist for a decision of who it will go to will be made by the artist. The art piece will need to be picked up in West Kelowna.

Karen Graham, Project Coordinator, presented the Breastfeeding Art Expo at the International Lactation Consultant Conference in Portland Oregon in July 2018. It was very well received! Check out the story here.

Free T-shirts. We have a few breastfeeding art expo t-shirts left over. These T-shirts have the beautiful word image from the front cover of Kaylyn Leanne Taylor’s art piece/book Mothers’ Eleutheromania. If you would like a T-shirt please contact [email protected].

Free Art Catalogues! We have quite a few catalogues left over. If you are interested in a couple or even a box or two, please contact [email protected] If you are an art teacher, they are an excellent resource to share with students. Also great to put in waiting rooms.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in Canada October 1st - 7th. Many communities celebrate with latch on events aimed at promoting, supporting and protecting and breastfeeding. Here in Kelowna, our breastfeeding celebration and challenge takes place on September 29th at The Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market. Register from 10-10:45, latch on 11am and enter to win a Medela Breast pump!
