Travelling with my honey is one of my favourite things to do. Especially when we travel sans kids! With fall in full swing now, our weekends are packed with practices, tournaments and games, and downtime is spent catching up on housework and grabbing moments of #zen and #selfcare when I can. Hockey season is in full swing here in my neck of the world. Fees have been paid, apparel has been bought, schedules have been entered into the calendars, stinky bags are airing out on the back deck. This is our family’s 9th year of the sport. I broach the season with mixed feelings every year. On one hand, I am a grateful that my child has an opportunity to engage in an activity that he loves. On the other, the politics, the time away from home and family and (if we’re... being honest) the smell of adolescent hockey equipment airing in my basement gives me pause. I worry that I am allowing to singular a focus on our family activities. I worry that the politics of the sport will swallow me up. I recall the days growing up in my small town where hockey (and it’s players) were king, and the rest of us had to hustle for our worthiness, always playing second fiddle to the hockey players who seemed to rule the school and our small town social ladder. I worry that the smell will never leave my house !! . . I recently read an incredible book that articulated this feeling that sits in my gut each year. Home Ice: confessions of a reluctant hockey mom by Angie Abdou has given voice to my fears around the sport, covering everything from the agonizing tryout and tiering process, the sexism, the toxicity in the stands, but also the wonderful friendships that can be made, the gift of exercise and working to accomplish something as a team and the exhilaration our sons and daughters can feel while on the ice. I go into this season knowing I am not alone with my mixed feelings of pleasure and frustration that I feel with the sport. . I’m gonna be honest here...electronics are a constant battle for everyone in my house, including me. But this moment reminds me that it doesn’t take much to help my kids live a simple life. Making crafting supplies, games and other lo-fi activities available over the years has helped my kids to remember to turn off their phones and be in the moment. Not always easy, but so, so necessary. I heard an easy rule the other day...have the family take a digital sabbatical togethe...r one hour a day, one day a week and one week a year. In my house, back to school also means back to sports! It also means back to time spent in the car, time spent waiting at practice and time spent cheering the kids on at games. I like to build in a bit of self care during all of this time. So today, I will be giving my kid-mobile a good cleaning, and then stock it with a few favourite crystals and essential oils for zen on the go. I will also be stocking my mom bag not only with essentials for the kids, but also a few goo...dies for myself while on the go...healthy granola bars, nuts and other snacks, as well as a book of favourite poetry and a journal, just in case. I’ve learned over the years that a little planning goes a long way when it comes to my mental health during the busy fall season! . . . This. It took me waaay to many years to learn this lesson. Through coaching and meditation, I now know to listen to what my body and intuition is telling me when it comes to making decisions. What feels right, is often what IS right. I am starting a new adventure on Monday. Just a year ago, I wouldn’t have considered it for many reasons. Now that I have learned to tap deeply into my intuition, and learned to trust that my vocation can find a home in many places, ... the decision to say yes came quickly and easily. And so we say good-bye to summer. The labour day long weekend is always a period of mourning for our family. Summers are always so free, and the back to school schedule also means back to work for my partner, who teaches. I too will be heading back to work as I launch my 1:1 coaching sessions and continue organizing with @breathingspace_coaching and finding new ways to serve in my other profession of librarianship.
