Canadian Olympic swimmer Brent Hayden is the comeback kid. He won the 50 Free last night at the Olympic Swimming Trials and earned a qualification for his fourth Olympic Games. The 37-year-old will be Canada's oldest Olympic swimmer of all time. In 2019, after having been seven-years retired from swimming after his 100 Free bronze from London 2012, Hayden expressed his desire for a comeback. As of Monday, Hayden is one of fourteen swimmers to qualify to be selected to Swimmin...g Canada’s Olympic team. (Although Hayden has met the criteria to be nominated, Canada's Olympic swimming team will not officially be selected and named until Thursday.) FYI: Minimum age for LSS Instructor and Lifeguard courses drops to 15 (from 16); recently expired certifications granted extension Read the full announcement: https://drive.google.com/open In summary, the Lifesaving Society has just announced a number of significant policy changes to take place July 1, 2020.... 1) The Lifesaving Society Canada is adopting 15 years as the minimum age requirement for certification as a Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, and National Lifeguard. Candidates must be at least 15 years of age as of the final day of the course. However, the minimum age for employment for instructors and lifeguards remains at 16 years of age as established by the Ontario government in Regulation 565. 2) Emergency First Aid (EFA) or Standard First Aid (SFA) are prerequisite certifications to several LSS courses including Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard. Now, the LSS recognizes certifications from a slew of agencies as approved by Ontario government (whereas previously only LSS, St John Ambulance, Red Cross, and Ski Patrol certs were permitted). View full list at LSS website: http://www.lifesavingsociety.com//first-aid-prerequisites. 3) Certifications that have expired after March 1, 2020 have been extended. Lifesaving Society Ontario is extending until October 1, 2020, the validity of the following awards needed by instructors and lifeguards for employment: Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard, Wading Pool Attendant, Instructor, Examiner, and Trainer. WSIB has extended EFA and SFA certs until December 31, 2020.
