Its boiled roots were believed to provide headache relief, and the leaves are steamed or boiled and eaten as leafy vegetables, petals were are eaten in salad, dried petals used in Chrysanthemum tea. Popular drink in East Asia used to treat respiratory problems, high blood pressure, and hyperthyroidism. Fans of the flower also say it can reduce inflammation and calm your nerves. Pyrethrins are pesticides found naturally in some chrysanthemum plants. Whole, crushed plants are known as pyrethrum powder. They are a mixture of six chemicals that are toxic to insects. Pyrethrins are commonly used to control mosquitoes, fleas, flies, moths, ants, and many other pests. Pyrethrins have been registered for use in pesticides since the 1950’s. They have since been used as models to produce longer lasting chemicals called pyrethroids, which are man-made. Currently, pyrethrins are found in over 2,000 registered pesticide products like bug bombs, dust sprays, pet shampoos & much more. Some of these products can be used in organic agriculture.
