It’s really hard to worry when you’re dodging through tree roots and leaping over snakes. If you let your mind wander too far when running through these trails, your ankles will remind you pretty quickly to pay attention. Scroll to see the name of this awesome 0.8km loop. Run it x6 for nearly 5km and by around half way through you’ll be able to pick up the pace as you learn the root/ snake locations lol. It is snake season out there for sure . Please send me your favourit...e fall running trails . There are many unknowns and a lot of stress happening for many right now, so whether you choose trail runs, meditating or another form of stress relief, don’t just sit in worry mode all day. #naturopathicmedicine #northumberlandforest #peterswoods #naturopath #sportsmedicine #runningismedicine #girlswhorun #runnerslife #trailrun

If you were outside this long weekend you may have noticed lots of mushrooms starting to grow. These white, branching fungi are known as Lions Mane. They are edible and have been shown to have numerous health benefits, in particular for mental function, memory, and in early stage dementia. Some of them were hidden in logs and others hanging out on the sides. In cooking, lions mane are quite good and kind of resemble seafood! ... Slide to the end to see one of the giant (beautiful) mushrooms I came across (this one is not lions mane). Clinically, I use mushrooms in supplement form, ensuring the correct extracts and doses are used for the desired therapeutic benefit. Other species of mushrooms have different benefits, such as improving immune function and energy. If you haven’t seen all of the mushrooms growing, it might be time for a hike! Use extreme caution touching or eating wild mushrooms; I suggest just admiring from a distance unless you know what to look for . We will all remember our first pandemic summer. Finding new ways to have fun (because after walking around the same block 100x you need to find new scenery!) Creating solutions for work, many of which will stick around because they’re just great ideas (washing grocery carts regularly just makes sense).... Our first pandemic ‘back to school’ is about to begin. For me, this looks like teaching online @loyalistcollege and a little less hammock time. It’s meant a new opportunity to explore technology and prepare to support my students in many ways as they navigate it. It’s also meant thinking ahead in clinic on how to keep everyone healthy, with evenings and virtual visits open to help accommodate new schedules. For many, it means a new set of masks and lots of mixed emotions (I’m honestly hearing a lot of excitement!) No matter what happens this Fall for your family, it will definitely stick in the memory books as the first back to school pandemic! #backtoschool #covidschool #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicdoctor #hammocklife #herbalmedicine #virtualmedicine #mindfulnessmeditation #covidlearning #pandemicparenting #cobourg See more

Lessons learned from a vacation during a pandemic: First off, I was hesitant to take a week off.. considering my hours had been seriously reduced not seeing patients in person for months during the pandemic. Well, I’m soooo glad I did. Lesson learned: Drop the guilt. Take a vacation if you want to. The pandemic was not a vacation. Ok the other lessons I’m bringing back with me:... It feels so good exercising every day, mentally and physically. My mind was so clear to think creatively, explore new ideas and reestablish my goals. Exercise makes me more productive. Thank you vacay for the good reminder. Meditation and yoga by the water every morning was pure bliss. Seriously, if you could encapsulate that feeling it would be a best selling drug. Also, coming back with me. Less social media and more reading makes me happier. Some books I read helped ignite new possibilities, conversations and creative thinking and less social media (especially in the morning and before bed) just felt really good. New goals in place for myself coming back for these. Vacay also included a little work (because I’m incredibly productive when doing all of the above and I love my work), and a lot of good food and play. Thinking about taking a vacation before summers over? 10/10 would recommend. #summervacation #pandemicvacation #cobourg #porthope #brighton #mindfulness #meditation #yoga #girlswhorun #girlswholift #sheruns #cottagelife #cobourgnaturopath #cobourgnd #naturopathicdoctor #sportsmedicine #functionalmedicine See more

The moment you remember it’s PMS and everything suddenly makes sense . It’s like... seriously, how did I forget this was happening? Again? Isolation has been hard. Add in some PMS and a little empathy and LOOK OUT! One day at a time and before you know it you’ll be back in your follicular phase. ... But, if you really feel like half the month is an emotional rollercoaster, it might be worthwhile to get some help. In the meantime, keep those good friends close. Saying someone (including yourself) can’t be sad because someone else has it worse is no different than saying someone can’t be happy because someone else has it better. I should just be grateful I don’t have it as bad as ______ doesn’t count as a gratitude practice and is unlikely to make you, or them, feel any better. There’s no need to compare pain, or joy for that matter.... Feel it. Move through the tough emotions because if you don’t, they’re bound to come out some way. & then, practice some real gratitude. Look for the beauty around you, the lessons in your situation, and the strength you will gain from it. #mindfulness #neurohacker #chronicillness #spoonie #autoimmunedisease #gratitude #chronicdisease #preventativemedicine #hormonalimbalance #integrativemedicine #functionalmedicine #sheruns #runnerslife #runninggoals See more

Happy camper An amazing camping trip I’d been craving for a while. Highlights included: feeding bugs to the frogs, star gazing for comets with a midnight swim, banana boats and paddling with good laughs. 10/10 worth the mosquito bites (see right scapula ). ... HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY. WOW. Recently reviewing some of the evidence on memory and found some impressive take- aways I think you should all know about. ... A study done at McMaster University looked at memory function before and after 6 weeks of exercise training vs combined exercise and cognitive training vs no training (control). It is absolutely clear that exercise has beneficial effects on memory, even in a period as short as 6 weeks. In this study, participants did 20 minutes of high intensity interval training. In some people, combining exercise with mental training tasks (think matching games), had impressive synergistic effects on memory. There are many reasons why this happens, but one of them is because exercise triggers the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). This protein is pretty much like miracle grow for your brain. Treat yourself, go move your body in a way that excites you and use your brain PMID: 28699808 Wicked illustration by @saraillamas TRAIN YOUR BRAIN #mentalhealth #psychologyfacts #memory #mindfulness #brainhealth #mindbodysoul #healthylifestyle #neurhacker #neurohackercollective #consciousliving #biohackingsuccess #neuroscience #bdnf See more

MONDAY MINDSET A flexible growth mindset is the idea that your strengths and abilities are not fixed but can improve over time and with effort. Talent is not a great predictor of success and your strengths are not simply innate but can be developed. What is your goal? There is a difference between not being able to do something, and not being able to do something YET. Add this word to your vocabulary, get flexible, and armed with the tools you need for success.... Research suggests that we should be somewhat flexible with goal setting, too. For example, setting goals in the form of ranges instead of single numbers. People are more likely to achieve their goals if they aspire to lose 4-8lbs as opposed to lose 6lbs. How do you cultivate a growth mindset? There are studies on hundreds of foods and each of them will have some level of ‘evidence’ that it can both cure or cause cancer. News reporters love these studies. But, it’s not the whole picture. News articles will often quote one finding from a research study (sometimes it’s reporting on something happening in a test tube!) and they often present statistics in a way that makes it sound much more impressive than it actually is because they don’t take into account what y...our baseline risk for that condition actually is (lowering your risk by 50% isn’t that exciting if your baseline risk is only 0.0001%). Journalists preferentially cover initial findings for a study, although those findings are often contradicted by meta-analyses (several studies combined), or future studies, and they rarely inform the public when they are disconfirmed. Here’s a few tips for assessing health information online: Fact check information from social media and don’t rely on this as a primary source of information (go fact check me!! ) Assess the authors credentials and training. Assess the author for bias; what is their goal? Are they trying to educate you or sell something to you? Does it seem genuine? What else do they write about? Do they reference material? Be your own devils advocate. Actively search out information that contradicts your thoughts on a topic. A very valid question It’s not all that surprising that your food intake should change based on your next activity. Meal timing around workouts can be an incredibly effective tool to take your performance to the next level.... Similarly, eating dinner #2 right before you fall asleep has been shown to have negative consequences on body composition in some individuals. There is no specific time you should stop eating, because our internal clocks and individual requirements are all a bit different. This is also not to be confused with going to bed hungry or that a healthy snack after dinner is going to cause weight gain. Night eating is commonly associated with emotional eating or mood disturbances, so to effectively change this behavior, you may need to give yourself more tools than just closing the kitchen.
