Charges laid in post-rally altercation After a thorough review of all available CCTV, including officer-worn body cameras, and witness statements, we have laid charges in an altercation that turned physical after a rally on Saturday, March 20, 2021. At approximately 4:15 p.m., a man left a rally at Prince’s Island Park when he was approached by a man in a wheelchair who called him an offensive name. A verbal altercation ensued followed by the wheelchair-bound man ripping a c...rucifix necklace from the other man’s neck. The man struck the man in the wheelchair multiple times, at which time, several of the wheelchair-bound man’s friends began to gather around the two. The man who left the rally had been carrying a flagpole at the time of the altercation. He made a jabbing motion toward the group of people before striking a woman in the chest with the butt end of his flagpole, pushing her backwards five to 10 feet. A struggle ensued between the man in the wheelchair and the man with the flagpole, which resulted in the man falling out of his wheelchair and the flagpole being broken. One of the group interjected in the altercation and the man with the flag pole attempted to punch the individual before stepping backwards, losing his footing and falling. Officers intervened and separated the parties, all of which refused to provide statements at that time. It is believed the man in the wheelchair instigated the encounter both verbally and with the first physical contact. However, the other man’s response by numerous punches to the wheelchair-bound man, and the subsequent strike to the woman with the flagpole were beyond reasonable to stop any perceived threat or assault. As a result, 65-year-old Milan MATUSIK, has been charged with assault and assault with a weapon. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. A thorough review of this investigation determined the assault did not meet the threshold for hate crimes, or hate-motivated criminal allegations. Finding a balance between the rights and freedoms of expression, with public safety and the impact these rallies have on the community, is extremely challenging. As a Service we strongly condemn racism and hate. Although we may find certain viewpoints not in alignment with who we are as a compassionate, kind community, physical violence is never the answer.

Second person sought in connection with 2020 homicide Nearly one year ago, Sheldon Wolf came to visit Calgary from Carrot River, Sask., but he never returned home. Wolf, 47, was the victim of a homicide after meeting with several people on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020. His body was located north of Airdrie two days later and his death ruled a homicide.... Investigators believe Wolf left the downtown Sandman Hotel and met willingly with several people whom he had no previous relationship with. One of those individuals is alleged to have been Fayiah (Victor) Braima, 23, of Calgary. He was charged last year with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial. Detectives continue to search for others who are believed to have been with Wolf prior to and at the time of his death. A person of interest has been identified and is now being sought in connection with the homicide. We are looking for Sharmarke Ali MOHAMED, 22, (alias MOHAMOD) whose last known address was in Regina, Sask. MOHAMED also has ties to the Toronto area. It’s alleged Mohamed exited a white Infiniti QX4 and then entered a Toyota Scion with Wolf already inside minutes before the homicide. A photo of Mohamed and the Infiniti QX4 are being publicly released today. "We know several people were involved in Mr. Wolf’s homicide and we are intent on locating those individuals," said Homicide Unit Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta. "We won’t stop and will continue to pursue this until we’re satisfied everyone involved has been held responsible. Visitors to Calgary have the right to feel safe." We ask anyone with information about Mohamed’s whereabouts or the homicide to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods: TALK: 1-800-222-8477 TYPE: www.calgarycrimestoppers.org APP: "P3 Tips" Case #20049391/3581

Charges laid in 40-year-old cold case sexual assaults Significant advances in DNA science have aided Calgary Police Service cold case sex crimes investigators with making an arrest in two sexual assaults that occurred nearly 40 years ago. On Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021, Patrick Zamora, 64, of Calgary, was charged in relation to two offences that occurred in 1981.... On June 16, 1981, a young, female nursing student was returning to her residence at the Foothills Medical Centre in the early morning hours when she was attacked by an unknown offender and raped. In relation to this offence, Zamora has been charged with "Rape and Choking" as described in the 1981 Criminal Code of Canada. A couple of weeks later, on July 1, 1981, a young, female lab technician was returning to her vehicle in the early morning hours after leaving a building on the Foothills Medical Centre campus, when she was attacked by an unknown offender and raped. In relation to this offence, Zamora has been charged with "Rape" as described in the 1981 Criminal Code of Canada. "These offences were investigated extensively in 1981 by detectives in the Sex Crimes Unit with no offender identified in relation to the attacks," said Staff Sergeant Michelle Doyle. "These cases highlight that dedicated investigative work coupled with technological advances can result in new information, leading to charges. Even after 40 years, we will not stop investigating cold cases." Zamora is next scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, April 1, 2021. Case #81033920/81037321/#2788 & #3278

Police investigating death of infant - Update. The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate the suspicious death of an infant after a body was discovered at a residence in the southeast. On Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at approximately 12 p.m., police responded to a check on welfare request for an infant in a residence located in the 100 block of Brightonstone Bay S.E. Upon arrival, police located a deceased infant in the home.... The autopsy was started today, Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, to help investigators determine the cause of the baby’s death. However, infant autopsies often take several weeks or sometimes months to complete. This is due to the highly specialized testing that is required. For this reason, the name of the infant will not be released until the autopsy and additional medical testing has been completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Police have spoken to several family members over the weekend who have been co-operative with investigators. Police have not yet been able to speak with the mother of the infant. Investigators are confident that there is no risk to any other children or to the public as a result of this incident. Given the sensitivities of this investigation, no further details can be released at this time. They serve seniors across #yyc who struggle financially and have limited to no family supports. Their wish lists always leave us humbled knowing that some are asking for items that many ...are fortunate to purchase without every giving it a second thought. Serious collision involving gravel truck and trailer We are investigating a serious injury collision that involved a gravel truck and trailer and two SUVs that occurred last night. At approximately 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020, a Kenworth gravel truck and trailer operated by a 46-year-old man was travelling east on McKnight Boulevard N.E. near Barlow Trail, when it rear-ended a Honda Pilot also travelling east.... The Honda, which was being driven by a 33-year-old man, lost control and spun out onto the centre emergency shoulder before spinning back across the eastbound traffic lanes of McKnight Boulevard. The driver was not injured as a result of the collision. After colliding with the Honda, the gravel truck veered left and travelled across the shoulder and onto the centre median, before entering the westbound lanes of McKnight Boulevard. The gravel truck then struck a Toyota Highlander travelling west on McKnight, with two occupants: a 37-year-old male passenger and a 39-year-old male driver. The Toyota Highlander was forced backward and off the road onto the boulevard, where it came to rest. The occupants of the Toyota Highlander suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment. The gravel truck continued off the road up and over a berm, where it struck two trees before coming to a rest in the parking lot of the Hilton Garden Inn, located on Pegasus Road N.E. The truck and trailer were significantly damaged as a result of the collisions. The 46-year-old male driver suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. Excessive speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this collision. We are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision and are asking them to call the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234 or contact Calgary Crime Stoppers anonymously through any of the following methods: TALK: 1-800-222-8477 TYPE: www.calgarycrimestoppers.org APP: "P3 Tips" Case #20416253/4421

Police Accountability Takes Time A video of one of our officers released as part of a criminal trial this week has raised some understandable questions about police accountability in our city. In this case, concerns about the incident were immediately raised by a supervisor after he witnessed it and, after an investigation, we charged Constable Alex Dunn with assault causing bodily harm in May 2019.... To ensure the trial is not unfairly influenced, we cannot complete an internal disciplinary process on this until the court process is finished. Our internal process will determine after the trial whether discipline, up to and including dismissal, is appropriate. The trial has highlighted some of the complicated aspects of police accountability in Alberta and we have done our best to answer the questions we are hearing here: https://newsroom.calgary.ca/police-accountability-takes-ti/ (Photos of the longer statement are also included in this post)

Wanted #Calgary man arrested in BC. Wyatt READER, a man wanted in Calgary in connection with a violent domestic incident, has been arrested by the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. We asked for help from BC residents last week after our investigators found evidence that READER was living in a vehicle in the BC interior. Canada-wide warrants were issued for his arrest and information about him was shared with police agencies in the area where he was thought to be located.... On Saturday, October 10, 2020, the RCMP in #Vernon were called about suspicious activity at a local store. They arrested and charged READER in connection with that incident. We are now working with partner agencies to bring him back to Calgary to face his domestic charges. Domestic violence is a serious matter and it is not uncommon to see people cross borders to try and escape charges, said Staff Sergeant Paul Wozney, with the Domestic Conflict Unit. Canadian law enforcement agencies are very well integrated and share information seamlessly, so sooner or later a person with warrants will be found. READER, 21, of Calgary, is charged with assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, forcible confinement, and five counts of failing to comply with court orders connected to a domestic incident on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, during which it is believed a female was violently assaulted.

Charges laid in Memorial Drive homicide A woman has been charged in relation to a homicide that occurred last week inside a vehicle travelling on Memorial Drive. At approximately 8:50 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, we were called to the intersection of 36 Street N.E., and Memorial Drive, for reports that a man was found dead after exiting a vehicle, that was stopped at a red light. Police and EMS were dispatched, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.... The victim was identified as David Bawden, 59, of Calgary. Investigators believe that the victim was picked up while walking along Memorial Drive several minutes before he was fatally assaulted inside the vehicle. After receiving a significant amount of information from the public, we located the vehicle on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020, and executed a search warrant on a residence located in the 2600 block of 17 Street S.W. A man and a woman were taken into custody from the residence, however they were released without charges. Based on additional evidence, and with the assistance of Calgary Transit peace officers, a third person was taken into custody yesterday, Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, and is now facing charges. Detectives are still working to determine a motive for the killing, as well as if the victim and offender were known to each other. Ronita Wildman, 34, of Calgary, is charged with one count of manslaughter. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020. "Information from the public was instrumental in helping us solve this case so quickly," says Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.
