Canyon-Lister Fire Department 18.05.2021

We have already had multiple calls for uncontrolled wildfires this year, all of them caused by human activity. Due to the low amount of snow in the valley over the winter, the grasses and other wildfire fuels are unseasonably dry and flammable. Please use extreme caution with any activities that may cause a wildfire.

The BC Wildfire Service is continuing to respond to the Boulder Creek wildfire (N71973) that was discovered the afternoon of March 28, 2021. The fire is located... about 20 kilometres north of Creston and though initially estimated to be 10 hectares, it has now been mapped at 7.6 hectares. Currently there are crews on site being supported by a Creston Fire Department water tender. The cause is under investigation. While Highway 3A is open in both directions, be advised that crews are working in the area, stay aware of your surroundings but do not stop as it can create a dangerous situation for both crews and other drivers.

As the western United States are experiencing an unprecedented level of wildfire activity, the BC Wildfire Service has committed to sending an initial group of ...207 firefighters and related personnel to Redmond, Oregon, and will potentially be sending an additional 200 personnel in the coming days and weeks. Health and safety are our first priorities and therefore the B.C. firefighters and staff will be taking extraordinary precautions to safeguard the health of everyone participating in this deployment, both during their time in the U.S. and upon return to Canada. Our Social Media is usually full of our aerial firefighting fleet. This post is going to be different; this post is about the brave men and women who know no d...ivide amongst us. No politics, no skin color, only heart, blood, sweat and tears. The men and women working tirelessly throughout this National Wildland Fire Emergency have seen more than their fair share of tragedy, destruction and chaos. We used to see these Crews, Hotshots, and Jumpers mostly in the wilderness areas. As we have all seen this season, they are now becoming a common site in the urban interface; often partnering with our local first responders. This post is from the bottom of our hearts and we pray that all these brave men and women return home to their families and loved ones soon; safe and together with their crews, just as they left home months ago. These men and women answer the call to do the impossible every year and work in some of the most hostile conditions imaginable. These crews are very near and dear to us all at Coulson Aviation, as it is the sole job of our aircraft to support the boots on the ground. We work hand in hand with these heroes daily, and routinely see them go above and beyond as they answer the call. They are the best our Country and our worldwide partners in fire have to offer. They often go unnoticed or unrecognized, they often are not seen on the evening news. We are here to tell you all that we see you, day in and day out, we at Coulson, our Helicopter Crews, our Airplane Crews, our Maintenance Crews and management. We see you, every season you are there giving more than the common person will ever understand and putting yourself between a fire that is a mile wide and 300 feet tall. We see you, putting yourself between it and our homes, our business’s and our families. We are often called heroes at Coulson but today we put that title where it belongs. If you are a Wildland Fire Fighter, State or Municipality Fire Fighter or a Contract Fire FighterWe see you; we see all of you, and we know who the Heroes are. Thank you for your tireless service and sacrifice. #coulsonaviation #CoulsonUnical #aerialfirefighting

Fires burning as of Friday in the western states. Too few firefighters and lack of equipment mean a less aggressive fire fight.

The valley fire departments are still out responding to downed power lines and trees from the wind this morning. Please stay away from any areas that we have put up Caution tape as there are still live power lines in those areas. Also, burn bans are still in place. We have had numerous instances already today of people starting to burn the debris from the downed trees. Burning against the ban can be punished by a $1150 fine.

Camping is a long-standing tradition, and we recognize the role of campfires when enjoying B.C.’s great outdoors. The BC Wildfire Service takes the decision to ...implement a campfire ban very seriously, and the top priority is the overall safety of the public. Given that B.C. is a large, geographically diverse province, each of our province’s six fire centres decides when and where to implement open burning prohibitions within its jurisdiction. When deciding when to implement a campfire ban, a fire centre will assess a variety of factors, including: * current and forecast wildfire activity * current and forecast weather * type and amount of available fuel * moisture content of available fuel * availability of firefighting resources Escaped campfires can lead to human-caused wildfires, but that does not mean a campfire can’t be enjoyed safely and responsibly. These sprinklers can be put up in advance of an approaching wildfire to help soak the ground and increase the humidity directly over and around your home. They will work on almost any water system, including low pressure and volume. Many of our firefighters already have them installed on our own homes. They are designed to hang off the gutters, or the included brackets will allow you to install them anywhere there is a flat surface.

The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond to the Woodbury Creek wildfire (N71114), on the eastern edge of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, south-west of Kasl...o. The fire is producing a large column of smoke this afternoon which is highly visible from Kaslo, Nelson and surrounding areas. The fire is currently estimated to be 150 hectares in size. BC Wildfire Service personnel are on site, with the aid of helicopters. This fire is not impacting any communities or structures at this time. It is burning in steep and difficult terrain that is unsafe for crews to action directly. The fire was first discovered Saturday, August 15 and is a modified response fire due to responder safety. This means it is monitored closely and is managed using a combination of suppression techniques, including direct and indirect attack, and monitoring to steer, contain and otherwise manage fire activity within pre-determined perimeters.
