Public washrooms are a public good - access to safe, clean, and convenient washrooms is a critical societal need, a need we've seen highlighted all too starkly as businesses have closed or limited access to their washrooms because of the pandemic. We've built a portfolio of public washrooms of all sizes and types and are always interested in the ways cities and communities supply - and don't supply - this important piece of civic infrastructure. Check out this fascinating p...iece on the history of public washrooms in Vancouver in Scout Magazine (including some great old plans) to learn more about why there are few public washrooms outside parks and in urban and commercial spaces in Vancouver, still to this day. https://scoutmagazine.ca//vancouvers-cruel-and-ridiculous/
As part of our Zero Carbon commitment, our office sustainability committee - TNT (Today, Not Tomorrow) - completed an audit of our new office construction. The results? The carbon required to generate the materials is about 6,000 kgCO2e. ... Our next steps include estimating the carbon generated during course of construction, confirming our overhead carbon generation, and completing the plan of purchasing offsets, educating the office and monitoring progress over time. Just a little detail. When the public park washroom is open at night, there is a security light on inside which shines through water-jet cut steel plate transom (which also provides natural ventilation) It’s resistant. ... #design #detail #architecture #sign #signage #park #pavilion #light #steel #northvancouver @brettryanstudios

Join us, in collaboration with MOTIV Architects Inc. and Michael Green Architecture, on September 24th from 4:30-6:30pm to share a drink and a chat and commiserate about the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on our industry. ... Our team has been having tough, necessary, and interesting conversations about design, architecture, and racism in Canada and the United States this week. A number of important resources and organizations related to racial justice and our industry have been shared with us, and we are sharing them with you here today. The #designasprotest Day of Action and Design Justice Demands (below and here - https://twitter.com/BCLeeJr/status/1268291920759054336) The BlackSpace Manifesto ...- https://www.blackspace.org/manifesto Hip Hop Architecture Camps's Design as Justice Competition - https://www.architectmagazine.com//michael-ford-to-launch- And locally, Hogan's Alley Society and the push for a Black Cultural Centre in Vancouver - https://www.hogansalleysociety.org/cultural-center/ We know these links barely scratch the surface. We are listening, we are reading, we are learning. #blacklivesmatter
We recently authored a survey on the impacts of COVID19 on the profession of architecture in BC. We did this because we kept wondering what other people were doing, whether we were doing it right, and knowing that if we were wondering, surely other people were too. This survey is not scientific and things have already changed so much since we wrote it. But we do hope the results can be helpful to you and your practice as we navigate Phase 2 and beyond together. The survey results can be downloaded from our website. Stay tuned for a future roundtable event.
Park space and amenities are more popular and important now than they ever have been. When we can't meet inside, a picnic shelter, pavilion, or washroom building - like the Lhedili T'enneh Memorial Park Pavilion in Prince George, seen here in this beautiful shot from the City of Prince George - help us all enjoy our time outside and stay connected with each other. We hope you've all had a chance to have a physically distanced hang in a park with some friends and family in the last few weeks, whether that park has one of our facilities in in our not

Bikes are a great way to get around right now (as alwasy)! As we start to look toward commuting again, the ability to bike to transit and lock up your bike without worry will be all the more important. Our new bike parkades for TransLink are open to help you commute safely!
We've been working with TransLink on new secure bike shelters at several major transit hubs across Metro Vancouver. Check out Daily Hive Vancouver's coverage of the PoCo Station Parkade, which is now open!

Each year, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC - IRAC) bestows Fellowship to a select group of Canadian architects in recognition of their achievement and significant contribution to the practice of architecture. We are thrilled to share that Founding Partner Bruce Carscadden has been named a 2019 Fellow and will be inducted as an FRAIC at October's Festival of Architecture in Toronto. Also being inducted this year is our dear friend (and Ian Ross McDonald's p...artner!) Jennifer Cutbill. Huge congratulations to both Bruce and Jenn on this honour! The full list of 2019 Fellows can be found at https://raic.org//architects-14-canadian-cities-named-2019
On June 27th, head to downtown Vancouver for self-guided tours of Robson Square, hosted by the Arthur Erickson Foundation and our good friends at Measured Architecture Ltd. in celebration of Arthur Erickson's 95th birthday. The tours will be introduced by cultural historian Donald Luxton, with stationed architectural guides, including esteemed architects James Cheng, Barry Johns and Eva Matsuzaki, all part of the Erickson design team at the time, providing their unique pers...pectives as to how the building and landscape were designed, including the ingenious stramps, the cascading waterfalls, and the grand public spaces. Stay after the tours for the foundation's AGM and a facilitated discussion with Cornelia Oberlander. Find out more info here https://aefoundation.ca/robsonsquare

The building that is now our office is just off-screen, but it's still fun to see this footage of the 700 block of East Hastings from 1969. A lot has changed in 50 years, but this view of the Ted Harris Paints and the Astoria is remarkably the same today!
