2 AMAZING Haircut events took place this past weekend! Congratulations to Julia, William and Ainsley on the success of your events. We are honoured you chose the Canadian Cancer Society as your charity of choice! Julia and her son William raised $2,476 at their Be Strong! Let’s fight and win! haircut fundraiser for cancer research, advocacy and programs for those with cancer. When asked they said they are fundraising For Uncle John, Aunt Jean, Angela who is fighting right ...now and many others. Ainsley raised $2,340 for lung cancer research and programs/services to support those with lung cancer. She decided to get a buzz cut if she reached her $1,750 goal and help create a world where nobody fears cancer. Thank you so much for raising funds and sharing your new haircut! You look fabulous!

The Little Black Dress event is a signature event in the Carleton Place community. Although COVID-19 changed the committee’s plans for the 2020 event, the committee has not lost motivation for their event in 2021. During difficult times, they remember their motivation for hosting this event, and they remember their friend Kristine. Our dear friend and sister, Kristine, was always the organizer of the group. Always bringing us together to laugh, love, be loved, and enjoy li...fe. Sometimes we would gather at her home, and sometimes she’d inspire us to get out and be part of community events. Every year Kristine organized a table for us at the Carleton Place-Little Black Dress Event. Sadly, Kristine died of cancer in 2018 and we miss her greatly. While Kristine can no longer attend the LBD with us, we still feel her there with us spirit. This tradition has been so important for us. COVID-19 threw us all for a loop this year and the LBD event had to be canceled to encourage social distancing. But Amy Martens was amazing and transformed her back deck into a mini-LBD evening, allowing a small group of us to gather, remember, laugh, cry, enjoy each other's company, and dance the night away. I know that Kristine was watching and smiling All of you have a motivation for supporting the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society, take a moment and think about your WHY, and let it be your guiding light.

Cancer can change everything, but it doesn’t have to define who you are. Because life is bigger than your diagnosis. Bigger than chemo. Bigger than the scars. Life is about who you’re with and celebrating every moment we share with those we love. It’s about memories that live on, even if the ones we love are no longer with us. Life is bigger than cancer.

The Little Black Dress Committee spent Saturday September 19, 2020 a little differently than originally planned. We traded our little black dresses for face mas...ks, and the Canadian Golf and Country Club for the upstairs dining room at the Grand Hotel. Although we couldn’t spend the evening with the 320+ women that normally attend the annual event, we were thankful to have the opportunity to sit down and reminisce about previous years events. Getting together for dinner on September 19, 2020 was about more than just reminiscing about previous years; we were celebrating our accomplishments including being nominated for a special award from the Canadian Cancer Society. The Little Black Dress Committee was awarded the Regional Fundraising Impact Award. These awards are the highest honour than an individual or group of volunteers can receive. It recognizes the remarkable generosity and commitment of volunteers that go above and beyond to advance the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission. We are thrilled to have received such prestigious recognition for our hard work and dedication to planning this annual event. Each member of the committee was presented with a package from the Canadian Cancer Society which included a certificate, a thank you card and a letter of appreciation. We are so thankful for each and every one of the businesses and individuals who have supported the event through donations of products and services and to the businesses and individuals who have attended the event. We cannot wait until we can all celebrate again together. Until then, please stay healthy, safe, and please continue to support our amazing local businesses. The Little Black Dress Committee

At every meal, make it a goal to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables not only is it good for you, but it can also help reduce your risk of cancer. Try adding variety to meals by preparing your favourite foods in different ways. Beat the heat this summer with this refreshing twist on a Greek salad that’s full of healthy fruits and veggies like watermelon, kale and cucumbers.
