During an excursion to Creston Territory of the Lower Kootenay Band, Ktunaxa, and Sinixt last week to try our hand at picking cucumbers, we glimpsed the pil...es of edible food that are tossed by the wayside before even leaving the farm gate we also left broker than when we arrived. The farmers told us the market only accepts cucumbers that are four inches long or less. Perfectly fine cukes that exceeded this size were littered across the ground around us, or had been left on the plants to rot (although no bugs had eaten them due to the heavy coat of pesticides). The rows had already been picked through two days earlier by other pickers, so the desired size was hard to come by. Try as we might we couldn’t pick quicker than the equivalent of $7/hour. When we presented our harvest at the end of the day, the farm owner threw out the majority of what we had picked: although our cukes were under four inches long, they were either too fat, had the wrong shape, etc. Beyond being an abhorrent waste of edible food, it lowered our pay to $2/hour (see comment below about how this is legal) Canada’s food system needs a big overhaul. It flaunts beautiful, perfect-looking produce glowing on the grocery store shelves. But beneath the surface is a gruesome stew of unnecessary food waste (and associated greenhouse gas emissions) and the exploitation of undervalued labour, which most often falls upon the shoulders of migrant workers. These workers mainly people of colour from Latin America and the Caribbean are those most susceptible to falling through the cracks (Mistreatment of migrant farm workers... from Globe & Mail, 2020). Workers from outside Canada, for example, often secure their work through middle-person contract coordinators and so find themselves stuck in positions without the ability to find better options (Weiler et al. in Policy Note, 2019). In our case, we had the privilege of job mobility. We were able to seek other work. But not before picking the biggest would-have-been-wasted cucumbers we could find to make a sumptuous salad and some pickles See more
