Located in the heart of the DOC zone of the Colli Orientali of Friuli and built at the end of the sixteenth century, Volpe Pasini is one of the oldest wineries in North East Italy. It was one of the oldest sixteenth century estates but it had fallen into decline. Dr Emilio Rotolo acquired the estate in 1994. He had come to Friuli to work as a radiologist, but fell in love with the neglected vineyards. Fourteen years later the old vineyards are restored, there are new vineyard...s planted and the Rotolo family is producing some of the best wines in Italy. With passion, they pursue excellence and is demanding in their standards. The estate dates back to 1596 and there are the old cellars as well as new premises for vinification, bottling and labelling. In the extensive grounds is a lovely 16th century villa, and accommodation for visitors in the refurbished area above the cellars. Situated on the hills of Togliano and Prepotto in the best wine growing areas of the Colli Orientali del Friuli the 52 hectares of vineyards are beautifully laid out, some in the shape of an amphitheatre. The Rotolo family continue wth true passion to maintain and preserve quality wines which have behind them a history of excellence and tradition. They consider it vital that small biodynamic producers are supported and encouraged, reversing in a small way the international tendency to lose individual characteristics of grape varieties and marginalise small producers. Otherwise the risk is that we will lose biodiversity. For each species lost, it is a blow to the heart of humanity.
