Pets & Family Violence- You don't have to leave your pets behind. Call (780-447-3600 ext 3750) or email ([email protected]) One Family Welfare can help with their Pet Safekeeping Program... What is the pet safekeeping program? The pet safekeeping program is dedicated to help victims of family violence leave abusive situations by providing temporary care for their pets. In addition to providing short-term housing for pets belonging to individuals who are leaving a situation of family violence, the services provided by the program include: Customized safety planning for individuals staying in or returning to a violent relationship, companion animals included. Crisis intervention for individuals victimized by family violence. Referrals to supporting agencies and community resources. Collaborative case management to reach personal goal outcomes, companion animals included. Educational outreach focusing on the cruelty connection and the Pet Safekeeping Program. Why is the pet safekeeping program important? Studies have shown that individuals may delay leaving a domestic violence situation out of concern for the safety of the family pet(s). Key findings from the Alberta SPCA study showed that: 59% of abused women with animals were afraid to seek help out of concern for their animals 36% of abused women with animals reported that their abuser threatened or harmed their animals 85% of threats against animals were carried out In cases that involved children as well as threatened animals, 85% of women reported that the children witnessed the threat or harm to the animal In half of those cases, it was the child’s own pet. #WhereToTurn #GoPurpleAB #petsafety You can find this information at: https://onefamilywelfare.ca/programs-and-s/pet-safekeeping/

Family Violence - know your Plan You can contact Coronation/Consort VSU @ (403) 578 3149 for assistance in creating a Safety Plan. Some tips to increase safety by creating a Safety Plan may include: ... Create a phone list with emergency contacts that can be hidden in a wallet Set up a safe room in the home where they or their children can go when their partner is become violent. ( Safe rooms are places where there are no weapons, ground level (if possible) with access to a door, window and phone Plan places where they or their children may be able to go in case of an emergency or if they decide to leave Agree on a code word or action that they can use to let you know help is needed Together or on your own, find out information about local services. Keep spare keys, overnight bags and important documents together and accessible. Help them prepare a safety pack just incase they have to leave quickly. Help find a safe place to store the pack where their violent partner will not likely find it. Avoid leaving pets with abuser if possible. Items to include in a safety pack: ID (Driver's license, health cards, social insurance cards, birth certificates, passports, status cards) Cash, debit, credit cards etc. Information about bank accounts Important documents (Emergency protection orders, restraining orders, custody papers, work permits, immigration papers.) Keys (House, car, work, safety deposit box etc) Prescribed medications for self and children Picture of you, the abuser and your children. Address book and important contacts of friends, family, shelters, doctor, police etc Essential clothing for you and your children. If pets are involved: pack extra food, blanket, leash, vet/vaccine information, medications etc #GoPurpleAB #WhereToTurn

Coronation/Consort Victim Services 24.06.2020

#GoPurpleAB #WhereToTurn It can be really upsetting when someone you care about is being hurt, but your help and support can make a difference. The information below will help you recognize signs of violence You might be unsure if someone is experiencing family violence, but have a sense something is wrong. Sometimes there are obvious signs of family violence, but often you may not notice anything. ... Some signs may include: Unexplained bruises, marks, scars, sprains etc. Partner ordering them around or controls aspects of their life including: where they can go, what they can wear and how they spend their money. They distance themselves from seeing their friends and family, or cut conversations short when their partner enters the room. Their partner criticizes or humiliates them in front of others or in private. They often talk about their partner's jealousy, bad temper or possessiveness. They become anxious or depressed, lost self-confidence and/or unusually quiet. Their children seem afraid of their partner, have behavioral problems or are withdrawn. They are reluctant to leave their children with their partner. You may than ask yourself, "Why doesn't my friend or family member leave?" It can be hard to understand why someone would stay in a relationship if they are being treated badly. Leaving may appear to be a simple situation. You might think the violence is partly their fault because they put up with it, or they are weak if they stay. While it may seem easier to leave, leaving can be extremely difficult and sometimes quite dangerous. This is important for friends and family to understand. When approaching your friend or family member it's helpful if: They are alone and it's safe for them to talk. You approach them in a sensitive way. You could say " I'm worried about you because I have noticed....." You respect their decision if they don't want to talk about it. They may not be ready or may feel ashamed. Don't push them, but let them know that you are there when they are ready. Everyone has the right to be safe. Be supportive and take what they tell you seriously. You may find it hard to imagine that someone would do that to them but many people who use violent behavior can appear very caring and charming when others are around. Don't underestimate the danger they may be in! If you believe someone and/or their children are in immediate danger, call 9-11 or your local RCMP! Consort: (403) 577 3000 Coronation: (403) 578 3622

Grief is our emotional and behavioural response to loss. Not death. Of course, when we lose someone we love to death, it can add many layers to our grief. No ma...tter the loss you are walking through right now, I want you to stop and truly pursue awareness to all the places this will impact in your life & relationships and then acknowledge the ways these will never be the same. Then, against all of your will, just sit with that and allow yourself to experience the pain attached to loss. If you want to feel like you’re deserving of a good moment, hour or day, then you have to allow room for the contrasting emotion! Sending you all the love as you start this week!! I’m going live on Facebook and Instagram tonight at 8:15 p.m. MST to answer questions for our educators about helping these kids come back into the classroom. If you can’t make it, be sure to leave a comment with your question and I will walk through as many as I can over 30-45 minutes. Spoiler, I’m also going to announce an event or two and maybe talk about the biggest giveaway I’ve ever done... Hope I see you there! Jer

In Alberta, child luring is more prevalent than ever. Numbers have rapidly increased since the beginning of COVID, and continue to move in a negative direction,... as Cst. Ulrich explains. For our second edition of CACs Connect, we are joined by Constable Holly Porterfield from Central Alberta CAC, Shamille Sarcuaga from Little Bear CAC, and Constable Joe Ulrich from ICE division, Edmonton. Together, they discuss how to define child luring, the impact on our children, platforms it is happening on, signs to watch for, preventative measures and resources, and steps to take if this does occur. The best defence is having an open and honest relationship and ongoing dialogue with your child CST. Ulrich Please take a moment to watch this informative discussion, and share with those around you. Thank you to everyone involved for making this roundtable discussion possible. Visit albertacacs.ca to learn more about child abuse, how you can help and find a Child Advocacy Centre in your area.
