Happy New Year! We have new holds and 19 new problems on the bouldering wall for you. Now we have suppressed all the grades for the next two weeks. This means you need to try everything and not be intimidated by the grade. After two weeks we will post what the grades were set at and maybe ... just maybe ... you will surprise yourself! (equally it could be completely soul sucking but we hope not).

Starting on September 29th, Cowichan Climbing Academy will be open for student only drop-In from 4:00-6:30 each Tuesday. This is NOT a drop in for the general public yet, it is only for Quamichan School and Cowichan Secondary students. The following will be in place for all participants: - Access will be limited to 40 students only. - Drop in fees are $5. (We will not be charging Climbing Academy fees this year as a result of Covid-19 so drop in fees will be $5 regardless... of whether you have climbing this term or not. Academy fees will be re-instituted at a later time.) - Climbers are not permitted to share chalk and must have their own chalk and chalk bag. A chalk bag with chalk can be purchased at the gym for $20. - A well fitted mask covering the mouth and nose MUST be worn at all times. - Climbers must wash their hands upon entry and hand sanitize throughout their visit. - Participants must practice physical distancing of 2m and follow all safety protocols in place at the gym. - Students must arrange for pickup at the front of the school at the end of their session. Parents are not permitted to enter the gym. - All participants must sign in with their full name, school name and a working contact number at each visit in order to facilitate contact tracing if necessary. Some more Homework for climbers! Now I have not watched all of these so can't give you any warnings about cursing and the like - so watch at your own risk and assume there will be cursing. The first one is Rampage which I already included in an earlier post but there are a lot of others here to fill your itchy climbing fingers (at least by now your itchy athletes foot had probably cleared since you are no longer wearing your stinky climbing shoes). https://blocshop.com/les-meilleurs-films-de-bloc-gratuits/

Hey climbers we are increasingly having people arrive with no money - asking us to spot them until next time or simply sneaking in. This is really not fair to us or the rest of the community. We are not a for profit facility and all monies collected go right back into the facility to build more walls and stuff for you. We are just volunteers and can’t be expected to remember who owes what nor are we the police trying to catch who is sneaking in. Be a good human and pay for your use. Thanks - it is not like we are charging for profit climbing gym prices.

Cowichan Climbing Academy sent seven athletes to Boulder Provincials a few weeks ago in Surrey. All were competing for an invite to represent British Columbia i...n the Western Regionals on December 14 and 15 in Victoria. Of the seven, six received invites and moved on to the regionals in the hopes of making it to the Canadian Nationals which will be held in Ottawa January 11 -12. Well, this weekend, the team was successful in their competition at regionals, and we’re proud to say, they are moving on to Nationals in Ottawa! All of our athletes train out of the Cowichan Climbing Academy that is run through a Cowichan Valley School District program. The program sees our athletes in the gym every day training for both athletic success and school credits towards graduation. The gym is open to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:00 - 6:30 for a nominal fee of 5.00$ which helps to support the program an grow our athletes. The gym is located at École Mount Prevost, 6177 Somenos Road. Come out and take a look, climb a wall and see what climbing is all about. You can follow the gym on both Instagram and Facebook for more information.

It was a tough round of bouldering for Brennan Doyle in Arco today and he was unable to move on to the next round. Brennan finishes 39th in Boulder.

Cowichan Climbing Academy 05.01.2019

So the entire gym has been re-set and is now just waiting for climbers. We are hoping to stick with the Tuesday and Friday 4-6:30 hours this year but we will finalize the hours in the coming week. For those of you in academy you are reminded that you do have the $175 fee to pay and when you do you will receive a new Cowichan Climbing Chalk bag - whoot! whoot! We will also be moving away from providing loose chalk this year as our lungs are slowly filling up with "white" lung! So we will be selling chalk balls to put into your new Chalk Bag at a very reasonable rate. Now bags are on order but you can see the prototype below. Comes with a waist strap, big pocket for your cell phone and brush holder - and when you pay your fees it is all yours.

Cowichan Climbing Academy 20.12.2018

Brennan Doyle competes in Boulder Qualifications at the Youth World Championships in Arco, Italy tomorrow morning. There is no livestream but we’ll keep you updated .

Cowichan Climbing Academy 06.12.2018

Unfortunately Brennan had a big slip on his final run in Speed at the World Championships, resulting in a 14th place finish. Slips and stumbles abound in the final rounds as athletes are pushing their limits to avoid being knocked-out of the round. 14th in the world is pretty good! The Korean Brennan raced in finals went on to win the bronze medal. He has a rest day tomorrow and then Boulder Qualifications on Thursday. @wayne.takashiba
