Taken from PQB News: "Kwalikum Secondary School students are looking to help clean up after the holiday season while raising funds for their 2021 Dry Grad. KSS students will hold a bottle drive at the school, located at 266 Village Way in Qualicum Beach and provide a Christmas tree chipping service on Jan. 2, 2021.... The bottle drive will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in front of the school roundabout. Recyclable cans and bottles can be dropped off, where students will then take care of the rest. For anyone who cannot make it down but would still like to donate, pickups will be available with the simple request of leaving your recyclables outside your residence by 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 2. KSS students will come around to collect. The Christmas tree chipping will be held at the BMX park parking lots, located behind the Ravensong Aquatic Centre, and as a service is provided by donation. Dropoffs can be done between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tree pickups will be done between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and is requested that those wanting pick-up leave their trees outside by 8 a.m. for students to collect. Due to COVID-19 town rules, students will not be allowed to assist with tree handling. For more information on either fundraisers, please email [email protected]."

Now that we’re into the final few days of our season at Cultivate I want to thank all of you who supported local small businesses throughout this trying year. Without you there is no us. While things were certainly stressful and there were many sleepless nights with all the worries of being a business owner, I felt the strength and support of my Cultivate team, the love of the community, and the hope that we could make it through this year together. We had our first day of private shopping appointments today and it went really well! Customers told us it was a treat to have the store to themselves and to not have to worry about other people getting too close. One of the great things about an ‘everlasting’ tree is that you can put it up early! We don’t say the ‘f’ words around here (fake, faux) except for FABULOUS! This fabulous little tree went up in the foyer at my house today and got me even more into the Christmas spirit (like I needed help LOL). Now all I need is a bit of snow outside! All of our everlasting theme trees are for sale in the gift shop, with or without the ornaments! Open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 8:30-4:30.

The talented elves at Cultivate have been busy creating some lovely 'drop ins' for your front door! Drop ins are made in a basic black pot that you can use as is or you can drop them into an existing empty planter! They come in a variety of styles and themes and we also have a DIY one which consists of just fresh cut greens that you can add your own personal touches to. Mmmmm...garlic. Available now at Cultivate to plant or eat! I just used one big clove of Red Russian (the one in the front) in my spaghetti sauce and WOW is it ever good! Want a little less punch? Roast a whole bulb and add to sauces, pizza, flat bread, and more. Just slice about 1/8th off the top of the whole bulb (don’t pull the cloves apart or peel, just leave it as is) so that each clove has the tip cut off. Set in a square of tin foil, drizzle with olive oil then wrap it all up in the foil and roast in the oven at about 350 degrees until softened (about 20 min or so). Squeeze the garlic cloves out of their papery coverings (watch out, they’re hot!) and use as desired. I like to mash it with melted butter to slather on a nice loaf of fresh bread then toast lightly for homemade garlic bread. Yum!

This is your reminder to freeze basil now to enjoy in your sauces come winter! You'll be so glad you did! Simply chop up and put in ice cube trays with a bit of water and freeze. Once frozen pop them into a Ziplock bag or container and store in the freezer. When you're making spaghetti on a snowy day add your herb cube and inhale the aroma! You can also do this with parsley or try any of your favourite herbs!
