Happy Labour Day! This Labour Day is like no other. Reflecting on the past 6 months, there is so much we've gone through together. On behalf of your amazing executive board - Jaimie, Adam, Hollie, Rey, Chloe, Lily, Odette, Dagoberto, Parvin as well as our staff Leslie, Frans and Sylvia - thank you for all you do for UBC and beyond! The labour movement is an extended family - we laugh together, cry together, fight together, grieve together, celebrate together and most import...Continue reading
April 27, 2020 "Mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living" - Mother Jones April 28th marks the National Day of Mourning. It has become a day to rededicate ourselves to the fight for improved health and safety. Every year, workers, families, employers, and others come together at ceremonies held around the country to remember those who have lost their lives on the job, and to renew our commitment to creating safer workplaces.... I want to take a moment to thank the CUPE 2950 members who represent the union on the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSCs) and the Local Safety Teams (LSTs). These roles are very important to keeping you and your coworkers healthy and safe - without you, we wouldn't be able to protect your rights related your working conditions, which can be found in Article 24 of your collective agreement. As the Chair of the BC Federation of Labour's Health and Safety Committee, I have been working with leadership from all affiliated unions from across the province to advocate for improvements to our Workers' Compensation System. This also includes being involved in a number of consultations with the provincial government which can been seen in the Petrie Report " Restoring the Balance to Worker-Centred Approach to Workers' Compensation Policy." A fulsome review of the Workers Compensation Act and System is underway. This year WorkSafeBC has published that in 2019 - 140 workers were killed on the job or died of work related disease in British Columbia alone. That's 140 workers too many. Every worker deserves to come home safe at the end of the day. Due to the pandemic, this year's virtual Day of Mourning ceremony is taking place at 10:30am at https://www.dayofmourning.bc.ca where speakers include the Minister of Labour, Harry Bains. If you are a local health and safety committee member please contact the union office as we can provide training opportunities for you to further your expertise in occupational health and safety - [email protected] In (social) solidarity, Karen Ranalletta - President, CUPE 2950 https://www.dayofmourning.bc.ca
April 24, 2020 Hello Friends! I want to start off with once again thanking everyone for their patience and understanding while we work through all of your emails and questions. And I want to thank many of you for reaching out after the announcement of Susanne Lester's passing - your words meant a lot to us in the union office as well as her family....Continue reading
