Congratulations to Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy, MUHC physician and RI-MUHC researcher, for contributing to a study that was chosen by Nature as one of the top 10 remarkable discoveries of 2020 - in all scientific fields. Dr. Routy is the only Canadian author of a groundbreaking study Latent HIV gets a shock published in Nature in January 2020, in which the researchers were able to push the HIV virus out of dormancy, an important step towards a cure. The HIV virus hides in CD4+ ...T cells in a latent form that is invisible to immune cells. We ‘pulled’ it out of the human gene in a way that was never achieved before, so that it could be recognized and attacked by the immune system. said Dr. Routy. https://muhc.ca//res/overcoming-greatest-obstacle-cure-hiv #Research #science #MUHC #HIV #Nature

Dr. David Hornstein always wondered what happens to patients after being discharged from the ICU. Digging deeper, he discovered that some struggle with nightmares, flashbacks, PTSD symptoms, and physical limitations. Motivated to help these patients heal beyond their ICU stay, Dr. Hornstein launched the MUHC’s Critical Illness Recovery Program, which helps survivors understand what they have gone through and connect to additional services or specialists when necessary. "It's... incredible how much nourishment they can get from realizing they're not alone, says Dr. Hornstein, internal medicine and intensive care specialist at the Montreal General Hospital. The MUHC's Critical Illness Recovery Program is one of the few programs of its kind in all of Canada. #MUHC #CUSM #ICU #CriticalCare #Canada
"As individuals, and also as citizens of the world this is an opportunity for us to do better. Only time will tell what the long-term impacts of this pandemic will be, but I have hope that there is a bigger picture to all of this. We can correct certain situations that we never realized needed to be mended before. I have faith and am open in learning whatever lesson I can about myself and our world. Working for the MUHC during a time like this, I can tell you that I have learned a great deal. At the end of the day, it is important to relinquish what we cannot control, and remember that life is meant to be lived." Giuseppe Margiotta, Building Consultant, Planning and Redevelopment MUHC. #SilverLining
The treatment of cancer often requires infusion, a process that involves the intravenous administration of medication for chemo or immunotherapies. Infusion can take several hours, and the patient typically returns for repeated treatments over a period of weeks or months. Now, the Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM) at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre opened the doors of a brand-new infusion centre, which was carefully designed with patient care in mind. Last week, the centre welcomed its first patient, Mr. Luigi DeMartinis, and his wife. A huge thank you to Cedars Cancer Centre, who worked in close collaboration with the CIM to bring this amazing space to life! bit.ly/32HZ7mY
I arrived at the MUHC as the COVID-19 Pandemic was starting. Our medical imaging technologists are aware that they place themselves every day in direct potential contact with patients suffering from COVID-19, including hospitalized and critically ill patients. They are truly MUHC heroes, and I thank them for everything they do. These are the words of Dr. Diego Martin, Chief and Chair of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the MUHC and McGill University. On this medical imag...ing, radiation oncology and medical electrophysiology technologists' Week, many managers took the opportunity to congratulate the work of their teams, including support staff. On the front lines of the pandemic, technologists demonstrate courage and perseverance on a daily basis in order to fulfill an essential role in the healthcare system: providing images and data that enable specialist doctors to make their diagnosis. #TechnologistsToTheRescue #MUHC #Bravo Read heartwarming Thank You messages from other managers: https://bit.ly/35qTifA

A beloved tradition at the MUHC is our Remembrance Day ceremony. In years past, a large crowd of staff, patients, and special guests would gather in main areas of our hospitals to listen to heartfelt speeches and traditional music, and to pay homage to our soldiers in a moment of silence. This year, we will not be able to gather, but we will remember. This video - originally released in 2017 - features archive photos from the Canadian War Museum and the RBC Art and Heritage C...entre of the MUHC, and a choral version of ‘In Flanders Fields’ by the MUHC choir, Enchanté. Lest we forget. #JourduSouvenir
