There was a time when #dance was a regular thing on TV - giving #dancers and #costume designers a steady paycheque. Here's a photo of the cast from an episode of Reflet, choreographed by the late Brian Macdonald (centre) for Radio-Canada, c. 1955 Irina Reid Portfolio Have a photo of you performing on the small screen? "A solo call for connection, transformation and healing (Santee Smith's) NeoIndigenA is a performance of the soul exploring our relationship to all living entities and elements." Her costumes in the piece help her "express a sacred journey that encompasses past, present and future in one body and awakening ancient ways of knowing and spiritual renewal" (taken from Kaha:wi Dance Theatre's description) Traditional costume can be honoured and adhered to or used as an inspiratio...n for #costume #design. Both are imbued with rich narratives that evoke meaningful and layered associations. Costume, in many cases, can be central to the theme of the work. Consider Yvonne Ng's work Headdress. #DCDChallenge This work is heavily influenced by my love for Chinese opera, street opera, and the symbol or burden of a headdress especially when decorated by gifts from friends, loved ones, mentors and relatives. ~ Yvonne Ng Join our move toward a more inclusive and accessible collection and partake in our ongoing DCDLabs project. http://bit.ly/DCDLabs... The line between #costume and prop can blur. Such is the case with the stones #PeggyBaker worked with in Paul-André Fortier's Non Coupable. Aside from being literal props she had to interact with, they were figurative expressions of her character's guilt, compulsion, and obsession. Share your costume photos using #DCDChallenge. There is a rich history of costume design in Canada - one which will be illuminated in DCD Discover, our new digital collection initiative. Sometime no costume says as much as a #costume. Sometimes it IS your costume - and given the context, it can say a great deal. Case in point, this photo of Alvin Erasga Tolentino in his work Volt, 2003 / Photo: Daniel Collins If you have a costume pic you'd like to share, be sure to use #DCDChallenge so we can see it!... This photo, is just one of many, many examples of what DCD will be sharing in its new #digital #collection DCD Discover. An online #archive we've been developing for 2 years now, it will not only share our collection but draw from archives across the country (and world)! See a prototype for yourself... http://bit.ly/DCDDiscover If you'd like to hop in and be part of this exciting venture, join one of our Live Labs. We have 2 planned for February! DCD was saddened to hear of the passing of Lorne Toumine. A dancer who began his career with his parents' ballet company in Ottawa, Lorne also danced with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Les Ballets Jazz, and Les Feux-Follets, among other companies. We were thrilled to have Lorne join us from Edmonton for the Toronto opening of DCD's Toumine exhibit in 2016. The Toumine family are a key part of DCD's early history beginning with the reconstruction of Nesta Toumine's Marie-Madeleine in 1986 as part of the Encore! Encore! project. The Toumine materials still form one of the largest collections at DCD with 4 linear meters of archives, 25 backdrops and designs, 175 costumes, plus some other small props. DCD extends sincere condolences to Lorne's family and friends.
