Rule of Thumb: Always backup your website before a major (or any) update(s)! Unstable updates in plugins and/or themes may be vulnerable and may cause conflict with other plugins you have activated. If you go for the updates and something wrong happens, it could cause severe issues to your website or even give you the "white screen of death"! ... it's a good thing you have a backup of your WordPress website though!... Another way to do your updates is what we call "safe updates". This is where you clone your site and put it live on a separate environment/host and do your updates there. If all goes well, you know you can update with no worries. If all goes wrong, determine your root cause of the issue and deal with it accordingly. This will be effective & easier to locate your issue, but more time consuming if you're updating each plugin and/or theme 1-by-1. Once your updates are complete and everything is good to go, you can either update straight from your WordPress backend dashboard or just migrate your updated clone in place of your outdated, previous version of your website. It's always better and safer (obviously) to perform "safe updates" and have your website experience no downtime than to be feeling sorry that you didn't afterwards. OH! And when all is done, BACKUP YOUR WEBSITE AGAIN, then delete the older previous backup that you made before the updates, since it's no longer needed in your database taking up space.
