Michelle Obama praised Zaya Wade (Dwayne Wade’s daughter) for embracing your truth in a virtual heart-to-heart. During their chat, Zaya asked Obama what advice she has for teens who want to be themselves and thrive. Like you have and currently are, she gushed, calling Obama her idol. However, Obama said that she was the one in awe of Zaya’s ability to thrive and live truthfully. I am just so proud of you being just an amazing role model and embracing your truth, Oba...ma told Zaya, who came out as transgender last year. It does take time to know what yourself is, for young people, she continued. So, my first piece of advice is be patient with yourself... This is the period of exploration, and sometimes we put too much pressure on teenagers to know who you’re going to be. She also referenced a reoccurring theme in her memoir and said, You’re not supposed to know yet. Your job now as a teenager is not to have it all figured out but to give yourself space and time to learn and grow. So, that means you want to try a lot of things on. Both the former first lady and Zaya urged teenagers to step outside of their comfort zone and be their authentic selves. We all think that we thrive with people who are just like us, Zaya added. Getting a different perspective from someone else who isn’t like you really helps. And that definitely helped me in becoming me and defining my truth. https://www.google.ca//2231/michelle-obama-zaya-wade-video #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtqia #lgbtcommunity #lgbtfamily #pride #lgbtqhistory #deltabc #welovedelta #cityofdelta #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #equality #diversity #inclusion

Alysha Brilla, an Indian-Tanzanian Canadian artist, music producer and activist, felt the musical pull to perform at a young age. She’s been enthralled with making music for as long as she can remember. Growing up in a mixed household with a Muslim Indo-Tanzanian father and a Christian European Settler- Canadian mother, Brilla credits her not easily categorizable musical style to being exposed to many different genres of music. Identifying as a Queer, femme BIPOC artist, Bril...la’s also been striving for more diversity and equity in the music industry. After being nominated for three Juno Awards in 2014, 2015 and 2017, Brilla noticed the overwhelming lack of female and BIPOC Juno nominees, and in 2017, along with prominent other Canadian female artists, Tegan & Sarah and Amy Millan, she spoke up about these issues, becoming an advocate for womxn in the industry. Brilla continues to be an activist who infuses her music with politically inspiring messages and beats. She’s also been spending her time over the last few years helping artists and youth to find their own voice through mentorship. I’m so passionate about people self- producing new music about womxn, especially, and non-binary people, having the capacity to have that creative outlet and express themselves in their truest ways. https://communityedition.ca/alysha-brillas-musical-path-to/ #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtqia #lgbtcommunity #lgbtfamily #pride #lgbtqhistory #deltabc #welovedelta #cityofdelta #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #equality #diversity #inclusion

"To Survive on This Shore" by Jess T. Dugan provides a nuanced view into the struggles and joys of growing older as a transgender person and offers a poignant reflection on what it means to live authentically despite seemingly insurmountable odds. The exhibition at The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami included prints paired with text illuminating the stories of those photographed, in conjunction with the publication of her boo...k by the same name. For over five years, Dugan and Fabbre traveled throughout the United States (see our article on this project from 2015), seeking subjects whose experiences exist within the complex intersections of gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, and geographic location. Intentionally going off the beaten path, they traveled from coast to coast, to big cities and small towns, documenting the life stories of this critical, but mostly underrepresented, group of older adults. The featured individuals had a wide variety of life narratives spanning the last ninety years, offering a valuable historical record of transgender experience and activism in the United States. This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between Jess T. Dugan, photographer, and Vanessa Fabbre, Ph.D., LCSW, a social worker and Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, whose research focuses on the intersection of LGBTQ issues and aging. Dugan’s portraits are open, emotive, human and, most importantly, optimistic. Her subjects stare through the lens, engaging directly with the photographer and viewers. They give a little bit of themselves, sharing a glimpse of their humanity. The accompanying interviews are illuminating, providing a level of depth that a photograph alone is unable to convey. https://www.advocate.com//20-photos-trans-elders-who-have- #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtqia #lgbtcommunity #lgbtfamily #pride #lgbtqhistory #deltabc #welovedelta #cityofdelta #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #equality #diversity #inclusion

Mom of four, podcast host, and blogger Danielle Schaffer has always encouraged her kids to be their authentic selves. So when her 4-year-old son Brody known as Boss Baby Brody on Instagram started going viral for his impressive ballet videos, she did everything she could to encourage his passion. "Brody has always been in tune with music. When he hears it, he would just start to move to the beat, and I would just watch in such awe. He sleeps to classical music and lullabi...es from around the world I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but music just runs through his soul in a different way. As far as Danielle is concerned, her son with born with a passion and a striking talent for dance and the art of movement. "Brody is a child, and we as a family celebrate our children for who they are," said Danielle. "If Brody wants to dress in his sisters costumes, so be it. If he wants to wear Elsa and Anna costumes, we will gladly put them on him. He's a child, and as long as he's kind, that's all we care about." "We need to let our kids shine and break these gender barriers," she said. "The minute we let them be who they are, we unlock their passion to truly shine and flourish. Brody is a wonderful child, and we support him. Sum up Danielle's parenting philosophy, and it's pretty straightforward. "It's important for me to be the bridge that helps my kids get to where they want to be, instead of the roadmap dictating what they should do," she said. "I am that bridge and I want them to be happy. They can be anyone they want in this world, as long as they are kind and helping others along the way. They will actually live their best lives if they are happy with who they are. What more could you want for your child, right?" https://www.popsugar.com//mom-whose-son-does-ballet-op/amp #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtqia #lgbtcommunity #lgbtfamily #pride #lgbtqhistory #deltabc #welovedelta #cityofdelta #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #equality #diversity #inclusion

Amandla Stenberg was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 23, 1998. Her mother is African-American, and her father is Danish. Actress and singer best known for portraying Rue in The Hunger Games. They have also appeared in the TV series Sleepy Hollow in the role of Macy. In 2017, they released the debut single "Let My Baby Stay" for the film Everything, Everything, in which they also starred in. They'd go on to star in The Hate U Give in 2018. Amandla always radiated t...he strength and power their South African name means (they were originally named after a Miles Davis album, from the Zulu and Xhosa word for "power.'' According to an article by Voice of America, the name 'Amandla'' "was - and still is - a rallying cry against oppression." Identifying as an intersectional feminist (i.e., feminism that discusses how social and political discrimination connect with gender), Amandla frequently uses her social media to advocate for human rights and female empowerment. She was named a TIME "Next Generation Leader," received the 2019 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award, and used her acceptance speech to advocate for #LGBTQ visibility. Ultimately she felt a sense of duty to the LGBTQ+ community, and in doing so, has solidified her place as a role model for so many teens struggling with their own sexual identities. "I wanted to make it very clear that I have romantic love for women. I realized I had so much internalized homophobia and so much discomfort around hooking up with dudes. I always knew that when I hooked up with girls, it was the happiest I’d been in any sexual dynamic. I love that we have this umbrella term of queer, and so many things can exist underneath it, but I realized that part of my journey was hiding underneath that umbrella ... It was easier for me to say I’m bi or I’m pan as I was figuring it out." Finding that level of acceptance within herself to live her truth along with the courage to share that authenticity with the public opened a new and liberating world. https://www.bustle.com/p/amandla-stenbergs-comments-on-her- #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtqia #lgbtcommunity #blm #lgbtfamily #pride #lgbtqhistory #deltabc #welovedelta #cityofdelta #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #equality #diversity #inclusion #BlackHistoryMonth

This map displays the current stats worldwide as we hope and pursue greater change, rights, acceptance and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Despite major changes in laws and norms surrounding the issue of same-sex marriage and the rights of LGBT people around the world, public opinion on the acceptance of homosexuality in society remains sharply divided by country, region and economic development. Progress is occurring. Many of the countries surveyed in 2002 and 2019 hav...e seen a double-digit increase in acceptance of homosexuality. In Kenya, only 1 in 100 said homosexuality should be accepted in 2002, compared with 14% who say this now. In many of the countries surveyed, there also are differences on acceptance of homosexuality by age, education, income and, in some instances, gender and in several cases, these differences are substantial. In addition, religion and its importance in people’s lives shape opinions in many countries. Attitudes on this issue are strongly correlated with a country’s wealth. In general, people in wealthier and more developed economies are more accepting of homosexuality than are those in less wealthy and developed economies. Those countries who have greater levels of education are significantly more likely to say that homosexuality should be accepted in society than those who have less education. A joint sitting of both houses of Bhutan's parliament approved a bill on Human Rights Day, December 10, to legalize gay sex, making the tiny Himalayan kingdom the latest Asian nation to take steps towards easing restrictions on same-sex relationships. The changes still need to be approved by the King of Bhutan to become a law. The move by the majority-Buddhist nation of 800,000 people comes after other Asian countries relaxed restrictions on the rights of the LGBT+ people. Ne...ighboring India removed a centuries-old colonial prohibition on gay sex in 2018, triggering celebration across the country. In Nepal, authorities will count LGBT+ people for the first time in the national census next year to help sexual minorities gain better access to education and health schemes. Bhutan is famous for its "gross national happiness" index as an alternative to gross domestic product to indicate real economic progress or development. https://m.timesofindia.com//bhut/articleshow/79665605.cms #lgbt #lgbtqia #lgbtqcommunity #lgbtqrights #lgbtqhistory #bhutan #humanrights #humanrightsday #deltabc #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #tsawwassen #vancouver

2020 has been a year of much tragedy and hardship. We think of COVID-19, the devastating opioid crisis, suicide, amongst many other illnesses and hardships people have endured - often alone. We pause to reflect on the loss of so many loved ones, so many hurting and grieving loss. 2020 also displayed human courage and strength in unwavering commitment - especially those working essential services and our health care providers. We have seen those in position of leadership makin...g hard decisions to keep us safe. Thank you. We have seen greater empathy and kindness. As we move towards the New Year, a thought has been circulating for us to again come together in community. Light a candle and place it in your window. Step outside with your candle to bring in the New Year. Let us enter 2021 with above all - hope. #hope #community #gratitude #reflection #lgbtqia #lgbtqcommunity #lgbtqfamily #lgbtqyouth #cityofdelta #deltabc #southdelta #northdelta #ladner #ladnerisawesome #ladnerisaplace #tsawwassen #diversity #inclusion
