Ever heard someone say that they must have killed their workout because they’ve been sore for days? Or maybe you’ve heard the opposite I don’t feel sore so I must not have pushed myself hard enough at the gym Truth is, we may have even had these thoughts ourselves because we were brought up to believe in this all or nothing, ‘no pain no gain’ culture. When this mindset is brought into your fitness journey, it typically ends up being more detrimental than it is helpful.... Why? Our bodies need both a stimulus and a recovery period in order to achieve our goals. It is normal for your body to be sore for a few hours following a workout, however, it should not be painful and inhibit you from moving for days. This extended sore/ painful period is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), with onset typically occurring 24-36 hours post workout, lasting 3-4 days. DOMS can cause damage to skeletal muscle and connective tissue, causing a cascade of acute inflammation when your body is pushed too hard. It is important to acknowledge when this happens and readjust your workout for next time. Keep in mind, if you’re so sore you can barely move for the next few days, it likely means that you’re skipping out on gym days, and the ability to maintain a consistent gym schedule becomes impossible, further inhibiting your goals. Remember, we should be hitting every muscle group 2-3x a week! Lastly, this all or nothing mentality can be detrimental to you psychologically. If you feel like you’re in a never ending cycle of being pushed to your absolute limit, followed by days of sedentary behaviour to compensate, it can greatly hinder your relationship with physical activity. Exercise should NOT be a punishment and it should not be painful. Feel like you’re stuck in this cycle no matter what you do? Shoot me a message, and I’ll go over some things with you you can try.
