Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 12- Don’t Drink and Cook: With all the festive cheer this time of year, keep a close eye on anyone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol is all too often a common factor in many fatal fires.
Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 11- Encourage smokers to smoke outside: Careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires. If you do allow smoking indoors use large, deep ashtrays that can’t be knocked over and make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 10- Watch what you heat! Do not leave your cooking unattended; especially if using oil or high temperatures. If a pot catches fire, carefully slide a tight-fitting lid over the pot to smother the flames and then turn off the heat.
Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 9- Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children: Matches and lighters can be deadly in the hands of children. If you smoke, have only one lighter or book of matches and keep them with you at all times.
Join us in Remembrance of all of the Brave and selfless Canadians who have fought for and continue to fight for the basic freedoms that we enjoy everyday in Canada and all over the world. We remember! #Norvan @RCL_DC
Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 8- When you go out, blow out!: remember to always blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Keep lit candles safely away from children and pets and anything that can burn, such as curtains, upholstery, or holiday decorations.
Holiday Fire Safety Tip # 7- Give space heaters space: If you are using space heaters to help take the chill off, remember to keep them at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn such as curtains, upholstery, or holiday decorations.
Chief Hutchinson presented 2 Fire Chief Commendations to our Public Safety staff today. Congratulations Lt. Robertson and Lt. Weatherstone. Your commitment to wildfire management and FireSmart initiatives have been instrumental in keeping our communities safe.
On November 2nd our Wildland Urban Interface Instructors had the opportunity to travel with the DNVFRS Structure Protection Unit (SPU) over to the Sunshine Coast. This was a scheduled interagency familiarization and information exchange with Fire Departments from Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt, Pender Harbour, Halfmoon Bay, and Egmont. Building these relationships with our fire service partners in the region is key to ensuring our overall readiness for wildfire response. Thanks to Sechelt Fire Department for hosting this event.
On September 8th a small brush fire transitioned into a significant Wildland Urban Interface fire near the city of Talent, Oregon. The area is served by Jackson County Fire District 5 which responds from 3 Fire Stations with both paid and volunteer Fire Fighters, serving the cities of Talent and Phoenix in Southern Oregon with a population base of 20,000 residents. It should be noted this was not a heavily forested area. Worthwhile video For all fire departments that have a W...ildland Urban Interface (WUI) in their response areas. This is a great example of why we devote significant time and energy into wildfire readiness, and into assisting our residents to incorporate FireSmart principles and practises on their own property. This is only about 11 minutes long. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XPB95JkVME&t=20s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XPB95JkVME&t=20s)
Enjoy working as a member of a team in a physical and high energy environment? Great opportunity with a closing date of November 30th to apply. https://wildfire.alberta.ca/recruitment/wildfire-crews.aspx
This incident is a good reminder that our rivers are running high, fast and cold. Conditions can change rapidly and we encourage all members of the public to stay safe along the water‘s edge.
DNV Fire had the pleasure of hosting a multi-agency wildfire exercise today. These simulations give us valuable insight and experience to working with our partners who would all have a role in a major event like a wildfire on the North Shore. Thank you all that attended! NVCFD, WVFD, NSEM, RCMP, RCMSAR, BC Wildfire, Metro Van, VANFD, Tsleil-Waututh, NS SAR.
Great to see our partners at Surrey Fire re-starting these workshops. We look forward to hosting on the North Shore in the near future as well, stay tuned.
Today, Chief Hutchinson had the honour of presenting a FireSmart Community Recognition sign to Camp Jubilee. Staff at Camp Jubilee have been working for months with our FireSmart reps to reduce the risk and impact of a potential wildfire. Congratulations!

Fire Prevention Week daily tip: Keep children safe in the kitchen; always turn pot handles in and have a safe zone around hot surfaces and cooking food. If you have a little helper, remove any distractions from the area so you can focus on your meal.
On Tuesday evening, our Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Instructors and an Assistant Chief spent the evening with members of the Bowen Island Fire Rescue to discuss wildfire readiness and response. Our personnel took along one of our Type-II Structure Protection Units (SPU) which provided us with an opportunity to discuss ways we could work together, alongside the members of Bowen Island Municipality Bowen Island Fire Rescue . This is just one example of how Fire Departments a...cross the region work to enhance interoperability and strive to build interagency relationships before emergencies like wildfires occur. Thanks to the members of Bowen Island Fire Rescue for hosting us, to BC Ferries for getting our personnel and equipment over to the Island for this important training, and to our partners at BC Wildfire Service and the Structure Protection Program for all their support to Fire Departments across BC.
