The Dog Haus 27.01.2021

Today’s a wrap on our 10 Year of My Dog Challenge!!!! We’re so impressed by everyone’s dedication, hard work and participation. The Dog Haus and @dogfitdallas came together to do this challenge as a way to inspire owners to put in some extra work to start the year off strong. Plus we wanted to provide educational training that was comprehensive for everyone that’s would also dramatically improve any issues they may be experiencing with their dog. See here’s the thing, people ...tend to focus on the big problems: the reactivity on leash, the food aggression, the separation anxiety when you’re not home. But the reality is, those big problems come from all the little things you do with your dog. Sleeping in your bed, no time apart, too much affection, letting your dog lead on walks, not controlling thresholds, and not fulfilling your dogs physical and mental needs. So what would happen if you continued to work on tidying up and perfecting these little things with your dog? The big problems will disappear!!!! But here’s the catch, it takes longer than 10 days. It takes longer than 20 days. Are you ready for the ultimate challenge? Do this for 30 days to make a habit and then 90 days to make it permanent! Then before you know it, it’ll just be how you and your dog live together daily and you won’t even remember the days where you had problems to begin with. Don’t believe me? Try it! Download our FREE DAILY SCHEDULE that includes a FREE FAQ so you and your dog can do the training properly. Listen, training doesn’t have to be hard, heck it doesn’t even have to be expensive (all this is FREE btw) - it’s just about staying committed and doing the little stuff consistently - and I do mean every single day with your dog. We’d love to see your ongoing daily work so please tag @doghauswaterloo and @dogfitdallas as you continue to make this little changes that have a big impact! Thank you so much to everyone who did our challenge and those who shared their videos! Was so awesome to see. Nothing makes us happier than seeing dogs fulfilled and a strong human and dog bond. Don’t forget, if you’re hungry for more free training advice there’s always our podcast @honesttodogpodcast See more

Be open and aware when working with your dog. Pay attention to what’s happening in the environment, what is the energy of your dog, how do you feel? Being fully present allows us to see the whole picture of what’s truly going on in that moment. Slow down, focus on what is in front of you and be intentional with how you guide your dog and it will make a world of difference.

The Dog Haus 13.01.2021

Pay attention dog owners and puppy people! YOU GET WHAT YOU PET! When you show affection to your dog while they are stressed, anxious, aggressive, nervous, fearful, excited, hyper, or shut down you are rewarding that behaviour and state of mind. Be deliberate with your affection and use it to encourage the behaviour and energy you do want. Pro tip: pet a calm dog and you’ll nurture more calmness

Raise your hand if your dog follows you around the house? Dog owners often joke about not being able to go to the bathroom in peace...fret no more, place will be your new best friend. Listen, no body wants a clinging boyfriend/girlfriend, and yet we allow our dogs to be attached to our hips majority of the time, yet hate when they become possessive of us. Well you can’t have it both ways. Teach your dog some independence with place training. Enjoy a relationship where you both can have your own space and still feel secure. Check our stories on how to teach your dog this relationship saving skill! #yearofmydogchallenge #dogs #dogtrainingtips #dogbehaviour #dogpsychology #calmdog #gooddog #placecommand #placetraining #doghaustraining

Want to change your walk? Change your tool! If you’re used to walking your dog on a flat collar, flexi-leash, or harness, those aren’t going to help you communicate with your dog on your walk. By switching to something like a slip that applies pressure and release, you can train your dog how to be on leash. We’re fully stocked with lots of colours so if you’re looking for a new tool to work in your walk email us and you can pick one up next week! #dog #dogs #dogtraining #dogwalking #dogwalk #doghaustraining #doghausdogs #doghauswaterloo #dogsocialclub #sliplead #dogbehaviour #respectthewalk #walkthisway #looseleash #looseleashwalking #looseleashclub

Did you know puppies need 18-22 hours of sleep each day? A lot of the time puppy nipping is due to too little sleep and too much stimulation. What does this lead to? hyperactivity, anxiety and sometimes aggression. Countersurfing and separation anxiety are due to a lack of boundaries. Crating is a great way to increase structure with your dog and thus decrease stress. Structure calms chaos. #dogtrainingtips #packleader #yearofmydogchallenge #doghauswaterloo #crating #cratetraining #dogproblems #puppytraining #structure #balancedtraining #doghaustraining #dogpsychology

The Dog Haus 01.01.2021

We use this clip in our puppy essentials group class so that owners can learn the importance of structure for their pups. This momma means business - no excitement and no feeding until everyone is calm. It’s our responsibility to continue to train them on expectations when they come into our homes. Dogs are disciplined in nature. This is why it’s important to have rules, boundaries and limitations with your dog.

January is walk your dog month! So why not focus on improving your walks with your dog - whether you’re working on less reactivity or tightening up your heel. Here are some tips of how to make your walk structured which will result in a calmer, happier dog show us your walk by tagging us in a story or post. #dogwalk #january #dogs #dogsofkw #structuredwalk #respectthewalk #looseleashwalk #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #dogpsychology #doghaustraining #doghauswaterloo #doghausbehaviour #behaviourbasedtraining #balancedtraining #goforawalk #dogadvice #dogtips #ownthewalk #walkthewalk

The Dog Haus 07.12.2020

Every thing you do with your dog is either reinforcing or discouraging a behaviour. Say for example your dog jumps up on you and you pet the dog, you just reinforced that behaviour. Now let’s say instead you said no and moved forward, that would be a way to disagree with the behaviour and decrease its likelihood. So now think of all the little moments you have with your dog - are you being consistent? Does your dog know what is expected of her in each scenario? Have you tau...ght her fairly or are you sometimes inconsistent. Dog Haus training is all about teaching you the right habits to have with your dog so that it’s part of your lifestyle with your pet. Listen, dog training isn’t just hour a day to practice sit or some other command; its much more than that! It’s how the whole 24 hours are spent with your dog. Training is a lifestyle, not a diet. #dogbehaviour #dogpsychology #dogtraining #balancedtraining #dogadvocate #trainyourdog #packleader #doghauswaterloo #doghaustraining

This may be a tough one to hear but please understand I'm telling you this to get you on the path to achieving balance with your dog and because I love you enou...gh to say it. Accountability is something I find so many people struggling with when it comes to not only their dog's behavior but their own life. It's so easy to blame everything under the sun except yourself. It's easy to blame your dog for their behavior when in reality you haven't taken the time to truly help them overcome the issues they have. It's easy to blame your upbringing for why you aren't achieving success and happiness in life when in reality you have the ability to be successful and happy by working hard at something you love and getting out of your comfort zone. It's easy to blame your spouse or significant other for why your relationship isn't going well when in reality you haven't done everything you can on your end to make it work. It's easy to blame your boss for not promoting you or putting you in a position to succeed when in reality you have never asked for a meeting to discuss what you want or you haven't been doing work worthy of a promotion. This stuff sucks to hear. I remember the day I decided to take full accountability of my life and take the blame off everyone and everything and put it on myself. It was uncomfortable as hell because it wasnt familiar to me. I had always made excuses for why I wasn't happy or successful and always had someone to blame but me. Ask yourself this question: Have I done everything I can to help my dog overcome their behavior problems? What excuses have you made for why your dog misbehaves? Who are you blaming? What role do you play in this? I'm telling you this because I truly care about you and want you to realize that with full accountability comes true happiness. You go from being powerless to POWERFUL. Stop blaming your dog. Take full responsibility and do whatever is necessary to help you achieve a balanced relationship with your dog. Hire a professional (save money and stop spending on dumb shit), take a weekend to binge on Dog Psychology content from someone like me or @cesarsway, etc. Blaming yourself = Freedom!!

Struggle is part of the process. It’s what makes you strong. Builds resilience. Makes you gritty. It also proves how bad you want something. Nothing worth working for comes easy. Keep showing up anyways. I often see clients struggle with training their dog and get frustrated when change doesn’t happen immediately. Expecting another being to change so quickly is unrealistic. I mean how hard is it for you to develop a new healthy habit? It takes lots of repetition. It takes discipline. It means doing the right thing even if it’s not easy all the while knowing the pay off is coming but you must be patient. Struggle is proof that you’re doing the work. Be proud of that struggle! I’m proud of you!

That means our daycare and grooming will not be operating but our retail curb side pickup will still be available during specific hours. We want to do our part to help stop the spread of Covid to keep our community safe! Please stay home and stay safe. We will be sending our clients an email with more details in the coming days. Last week we got the heartbreaking news that one of our beloved pack members crossed over rainbow bridge. Benjamin was one of our OG social club members, coming pretty much since we first opened. He was just a pup then and over the years we got to see him grow into a happy, sweet and playful boy! Benjamin always made us smile since his very first visit when he made the water bowl his own personal pool, and every day since when he’d howl at us, show us his prized stick, and use taller dogs as back scratchers lol. Not only did all our staff love and adore him, so did all the daycare dogs! He was a very special boy and we were so lucky to have known him. We will miss you Benjamin but know you are always watching over us. Please help us in sending his humans love, healing and support. At times like these community really matters.

This little guy always surprises us with his friendship choices. He was the very first one to get Ty to play who was pretty apprehensive around dogs at the start. Just one of the reasons why we choose to socialize dogs of all sizes in our pack. Enjoy this precious video. ps dogs are the best! - Liz

Lead by example and your dog will follow. Know that energy is contagious, so by harnessing yours you can change your dog’s. How do you do this? Be present. Take a deep breath before you work with your dog. Relax any tension in your body before picking up the leash. Be calm and envision the outcome you want.

If you've been taught to reach out your hand for a new dog to sniff, PLEASE STOP! The sniff test reaching your hand out for a new dog to smell -- is, unfo...rtunately, a badly ingrained habit that society has been taught as a way to introduce yourself. Because when you reach out towards a dog, you are using your body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe and whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You’re forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. And to some dogs, this is quite rude and the reason many snap at or bite people. This can also cause a lot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions. If they are on lead, they have nowhere to go if they are sensitive to spatial pressure, so they can end up shutting down, shying away, or snapping at your hand to make you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed. People think by offering your hand, it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand. Their noses are far more superior than ours, so they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you. Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog, so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction. Sowhat’s the right way to meet a dog? Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not everyone wants strangers to touch their dogs. Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side. Ignore the dog & talk to the owner. Don't stare at the dog or try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you and sniff around. They will usually move away and then come back for a second sniff. Some dogs will bunt your hands and wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) and then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats. And it's a more stress-free option for dogs and a better way to develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions. All too often, dogs are surrendered to the shelter after biting someone who unintentionally forced an interaction that made the dog uncomfortable. Please share this important information to prevent well-meaning humans from getting hurt and pups from losing their homes! *Thank you to Eureka Dog Services for sharing this great information!

Vets are saying that Kennel Cough is especially bad this year and unfortunately some of our daycare dogs have fallen ill. For this reason we know the most responsible thing to do is close early. No one wants a sick doggie for the holidays. Today is our last day of daycare for the year - however we will still be offering our one on one grooming services. If you have a grooming appointment booked tomorrow or Friday and your dog is showing any symptoms of Kennel Cough please cancel and keep him/her home. If you need to come in and pick up some raw food before we close for the holiday you can still do so. Thank you for your understanding! Looking forward to seeing you and your dogs in the new year! Happy Holidays!

There's a great deal of confusion surrounding what "structured walking" means, so we're going to break it down. What "structured walking is"... rules and bounda...ries in (what should be) a daily physical activity based on clear criteria (thou shalt not drag me around, thou shalt not pull incessantly, thou shalt not dictate direction or pace of walk, thou shalt not lunge and mouth off to passers-by, thou shalt not attempt to chase wildlife, thou shalt not jump on me or anyone else, thou shalt not pancake, etc). "The Walk" is quite reflective of what the nature of the relationship between the human and the dog is, as well as what goes down behind closed doors. If there's no structure, no respect, no rules or boundaries, no leadership, a lot of anxiety, lack of trust, blurred lines, unclear communication, etc, it will absolutely be reflected in the walk. Whether we live in the country or the city, a structured walk is an activity we should engage in with our dogs on the daily. Not just to "burn energy", but also to teach, lead, guide, expose, equip, and build our level of relevance in the eyes and mind of the dog. The structured walk is, especially, important and necessary in the city and in areas where there are many people and dogs sharing sidewalks and common spaces; most in very close quarters and tight spaces (hallways and lobbies of apartment buildings, sidewalks along busy streets, common areas, etc). There are 4 types of space: public space, social space, personal space, and intimate space. And those who live in the city, especially, are sharing very close, personal and intimate spaces. Many living on top of and right beside each other. Like many others trainers, we discourage "meet and greets" on leash as there's a time and place for "socializing". This, and most people do not have a solid understanding of their dogs, how to read dogs or accurately assess behavior and the information their behavior is conveying, nor do they have complete control of their dogs. It's also a very unnatural way for dogs to meet (face to face), and they're usually connected to a human (via the leash) who may feel unsure, uneasy, nervous, etc. about the meeting (which is information being sent directly down to the dog and will influence the nature of the greeting). For some of those soft energy, easy-does-it, marshmallow dogs...this may not apply. But most dogs are not like this. Again, so important to know thy dog so we can best equip, lead, guide, and co-exist with dog. SO. Structured Walking looks like this... : dog walking beside and *with* us (zero real estate in between us and the dog means best ability to share information, maintain influence with greater ease, and manage state of mind), : long, relaxed arm, : short, but loose leash (should see a soft "J" in leash), : us "calling the shots", not the dog~ pace of walk, direction, when we stop and go, when we stop and allow sniffing ("reading and responding to pee mails"), etc. : giving space if and when needed to: children walking dogs, dogs walking (and dragging around) their humans, dogs on retractable leashes, and- conversely- if you're having a particularly "off" day (i.e. feeling anxious, worried, frustrated, upset, angry, etc), as this is also information that the dog you're walking will absolutely respond to (*there's no shame in giving and utilizing space!*) Now, "freedom" is the yin to the yang of structure and order, and both are needed for balance. Having a back yard, doggie day care, etc should never be substitution for a structured walk; but rather complement it. Structure and freedom are complete opposites, but very much complement one another and work together to create this balance. In summary, "structured walking" does not mean robotic walking. It means leadership, guidance, awareness, respectful space sharing, and maintaining influence. www.packfit.net

Shoot us an email and let us know who to gift your cookie gram to and we’ll put their name on it and set it out for when that dog comes to daycare next. Cookie grams are $3.50 each or $9 for 3!!!

It’s that time of year! Cookie grams are back and ready to be sold and delivered by our little elves. Email to order yours and let us know which dogs you’d like to send some Christmas cheer to! Don’t know who your dog’s friends are? Just ask and we can let you know who they play and snuggle with most. Our cookie grams sell out every year so don’t wait because there’s limited supply.
